Hi everyone-
I have a quilt that I am attempting to finish in time to mail for Mother's Day (by early next week). I have it pieced, and I am mostly done with the applique, but I realize that I do not have time to quilt it all by hand.

Anyways, much of the quilting on this piece is just in the ditch or on a diagonal across the blocks without the wreaths on them. Do you think it would be okay to do all of that by machine and then just do hand quilting to emplasize the applique wreaths? My mil will understand if she doesn't get it in time, but I would love to have her get it as a suprise.

Any thoughts?

This is just my own humble opinion. I think it should be either all machine or all hand stitched. To my eye it is like combining crochet and knitting. Just doesn't look right or do either method justice. What does everyone else think?

Personally in my mind there are NO RULES except for the ones you create.
I hope never to create any. :bluewink:

Honestly, that's the same way I feel. ;) I guess I will just send her a card with a pic of its status at the time in it.

I think it would look nicer either all hand quilted or all machine quilted.

I have a couch throw that I plan to use both in mostly for affect. I plan to stitch in the ditch by machine and then hand quilt 1/4" inside the HST's. The top is done but I haven't started the quilting on it yet....maybe once I get started I will change my mind. As most quilting shows state "Let the quilt talk to you" If you feel at the time it will look right then I say go for it.

a few years back I did one with african style masks on it and machine quilted the body and handquilted the faces, looked ok when done and the hand areas kinda stood out (but I was in a hurry to have it done too :re: )

I am so not a purist - whatever works for you. I've done quilts with both hand and machine stitching, and they were fine.

The way I see it ... is this is your quilt you are creating ... therefore you are your own police - you create your own rules. Soemtimes that makes it so unique and different - not all the "same" thing (machine quilting only or hand quilting only) - I think it's all up to you.

I will often machine ditch-stitch what I call the structural lines of a quilt - within the seams of the sashings if there are any, or where blocks are joined - and once those are in place, will hand quilt within each block. When using the fine clear thread on the top, and taking care with keeping your stitches in the actual seam line, this part of the quilting does not really show. This combination of machine and hand quilting works very well for me, speeds things up a little, and as said previously, there are no hard-and-fast rules anyway.
...and then my heart with pleasure fills,
and dances with the daffodils.
