Stretchy wovens are all the go lately. This is spandex combined with linen, cottons, silk etc. They perform together to give a quality fabric look with stretch. The stretch is in the width but there is no change to the appearance of the natural fiber. Jeans, jackets, skirts all can be made with a stretchy wovens and have a really comfy fit. Who has used a stretchy woven to make up a garment? I haven't tried anything just yet but hope to in the next little while. Pre-wash before cutting the fabric and I also learned never use bleach. I would think areas of stress would need some extra care as well. MaryW

I've made a couple pairs of jeans with stretch denim. The first time I didn't realize how much stretch it had and used my regular pattern. The jeans stretched out and bagged after just a little time wearing them. The next pair I cut a bit smaller and they were great. Very comfortable. Unfortunately, I "grew into" the first pair. Then I outgrew them. Darn. |

I am being sorely tempted by some stretch poplin I have seen online. It is listed as 96% cotton/4% lycra; I'm wondering if it would make good capri pants and shorts for my dds. |

I made myself a pair of stretch denim hipster jeans for my last pregnancy. They were great! Also made a dress in a stretch sateen which was fantastic, I love stretch wovens! I've got quite a bit of it in my stash including poplin, more denim etc. The poplin I have is a shirt weight, no good for trous. I find it's no harder to sew than the standard woven fabrics, but is a bit more forgiving in the fit. Most don't seem to have enough stretch to need to downsize the pattern, but occasionally they are very stretchy, so you need to consider if this will affect sizing. |

I brought some strech denim when i was in New York last year (november) and still have not sewn it...i got a great price on it 11 yards for $10.....as a matter of fact I have only used one of the pieces of fabric that i brought in New York...how sad is that and I am looking forward to my next trip to the City in November and plan on visiting the fabric district again.... Jada -- I'm going in June. It's my favorite place to shop. Those little shops are fantastic. Dorothy |

Mo I used to have the streets all written down but tossed that info when I discovered the easiest thing to do is go to Times Square and ask a cop (there are always plenty of them there and they are very helpful) to point you in the right direction. It's about a block walk and then there are streets and alleys all full of shops with fabric and buttons and other goodies. If you are with a non sewer they can explore Times Square and Broadway and meet you later. It's all walking distance and the streets are numbered and in a grid so you won't get lost. Whatever you do -- if you are in or near New York City -- make the effort to go there. You will not be sorry. Dorothy |
