Do you HAVE to have a surger or some special machine to sew these fabrics? I see wonderful knits all the time, but I don't know how to sew them. I've learned that with my duaghter's leotards can I baste the seams twice and I use a zig-zag stitch inbetween the two bastings. Can I do the same with the knit? As you can guess I don't have a surger, serger, however it's spelled, I don't have one Just a plain old White brand sewing machine. Can ya help a newbie out? Carolyn

Sure you can, just set your zig zag to a narrow width and use that, experiment a bit, if you aren't fussy about how things look inside you don't need to finish knits (which why I liked them so much pre serger days). You just need a bit of stretch so you don't pop your seams when you move, A twin needle can be used on most machines and makes a really professional hem on knits as well!

Ball point needles are great for knits, and I also use a size 75/11 HS stretch needle when I work on knits. Personally, I like these needles even better than the ball point needles--I use them when I work with fleece. |
