I think I have made a huge mistake! I fitted my grandmother the other day for this skirt/top set I'm making for her. It has an elasticized waistline. When I fitted her for the skirt, the waist was too big, so I pinched in the amount of elastic I needed to take out on the side. When I pinched, I pinched with the seamline in the middle and equal parts fabric on both sides of the...pinch(?) I measured one side of the fabric that I had pinched in my hand which was 3 1/2 inches, so I figured that because half of the fabric I measured to take out was 3 1/2 inches, that I should double that measurement to account for the other half of the fabric I had pinched in my hand. Is that wrong? Well, I took out a total of 7 1/2 inches, and I think it is now too small! My grandmother has a 46" waistline and now the waist of the finished skirt measures 41". Will this be too tight on her? If so, what do I do!? Help!

Danielle, if you were going to take width out of each side then you would divide the total needed in half-so it would have been 1 3/4 inches. The other option on an elastic waist is to just shorten the elastic as long as there isn't too much fabric then in the skirt. taking it out of the elastic only will just make the skirt a little fuller. Does that make sense?

Did you trim the seams you sewed or can you just replace the elastic for the skirt?

Don't feel too bad-we've all been there!

well, now that I re-read your note, I might have done the 7 inches out which is double 3 1/2-elastic does stretch, maybe it will still fit-have her try it on.

When I have gotten the elastic too short, I have been known to piece the elastic back together. Sometimes you have two pieces of elastic and together it is long enough but by themselves they don't work. When that happens I piece the elastic too.
