Hello Everyone,
This Is My First Post. New Person On The Block!!

I Have A Simplicity Pattern #9469, and i'am having a little problem with the Collar band the rounded edges at the end of the collar band and the collar being to long and not looking right.

Problem #1. The Collar being to long, So I have decided to just take a larger seam and see what happens.

Problem #2. On The Collar Band and the rounded edges Where the Top Button goes. The Band says to take a 5/8 seam, so I Did. And The Band Hangs over the The Finished edge way to much about a 1/2 inch. So I tried to line up the foot with the finished edge (In the From Of the Shirt Where The Buttons Go) And Start my Cure and now the Collar Band is to short to button arond my neck.

So Any Idea's Would Be So Much Help.

Thank You

It took a lot of practice on those darn bands before I finally got them right. They still are not my favorite thing.
If you are using fusible interfacing try applying interfacing to a piece of fabric large enough for the band, then cut out the band with the interfacing already fused. If you are using sew in don't baste all around it. Sew along the top and bottom edges in the same direction so they aren't pulling in opposite directions.
Now see if it will fit on the neck edge. If it is too long trim it a bit before you sew. It will press flatter if the underside is just a tiny (1/16 of an inch) smaller so it pulls the seam to the underside. Now do the 5/8 seam and trim it close.
Before you put the band on, stay stitch the neck line -- put a row of short stitches just within the seam line all the way around the neck edge. Now make small clips to, but not through the stay stitching. That way you will be able to pull it straighter when you put the band on and it will give you a bit more room too.
My husband is a bear to sew these bands for because he has a big fat neck. He has problems with ready to wear shirts too so he has to wear extenders when he wears a tie and leave the band unbuttoned when he doesn't have a tie.

If the band is too big, make a smaller one. If it's too long, cut it shorter from the middle. Consider making the seam allowances smaller, like 1/4 inch. Practice making them out of cheapie fabric until you get it figured out. Every time I sew something, I practice the stuff I'm going to be doing if I haven't done it for a few weeks or more (so basically, that's almost every time I sew something).

I understand that the band is too large, but is it too large if you put the edges together and sew on the 5/8 seam line. If you sew anything less that the 5/8 line, it should be too large because the middle of a circle (the shirt) is smaller than the outside of a circle (the neckband). If it is still too large, check your seams and fold lines on your shirt to make sure that they are correct. 1/2 inch would be only 1/8 inch four times...so...if you took a 3/4 inch seam at each shoulder you would end up with a neck that was 1/2 inch too small for the band. If you folded under 1/4 inch and stitched the raw edges under at the front of the shirt or just serged off 1/4 inch at the edge and THEN measured the front fold line, you could also loose 1/2 inch.

An easy way that I like to put on those bands is to interface and apply one side of the band to the shirt before I put the other band on. You can go ahead and put on the collar if you wish, but offselt the (single) band edge by the seam allowance (5/8) at each front edge. Then sew that band to the shirt. Then apply the collar (if you haven't already). Press under 5/8 inch along the shirt side of the second band strip and apply the second band to the first, starting at the front edge of the shirt and sewing around the top of the band. Turn and finish as suggested by your guide sheet. I like this method because it is a little easier to get into the band because you aren't working in confined quarters at the front edges and it seems that when I do this I get a much closer match at the front edges.

PS...check your paper pattern and see if it has a couple of dots and says ease or check the guide sheet for the same. Sometimes the pattern company puts ease in the shoulders or neck area to get a smoother fit.
