Hi- I want to start sewing. I wish to use a machine for sewing small items like pillows and curtains and doing a bit of mending. I think I would also like to quilt. The problem is that I don't want to spend a lot of money until I know that I will stick with sewing. I want a decent, simple sewing machine in $100-300 price range. Please give me some advice. Thank you. |

I was in your shoes a while back myself! I wanted to start sewing and I wanted a new machine. You are starting off on the correct foot by asking questions.... Everyone has their favorite machine brands...I know that when I was looking I had heard of Singer and Kenmore (my Mom had these brands)...but there are Brother, Janome, Baby Lock and Husqvarna Viking to name a few...The prices start from $80 and go as high as several thousand!!! I know when I was looking there were certain features I was looking for and had a ball park amount that I wanted to spend. You also want a nice machine that is of good quality, with good features and ease in use. Here is a link to a web site that has reviews of all types of machines. I went there and looked at several different brands. The reviews list the features and also tell when people think about them. After looking into that if you have any specific questions feel free to ask. Hope this helps~ Sewing machine reviews (http://sewing.patternreview.com/) Click on the link for machine reviews mgf~ Blessings & Smiles

My biggest piece of advise after research so you can narrow the field a little is to go to the dealer and "test drive" the sewing machines. That way you get one that you are comfortable with-and don't let the dealer talk you out of trying....some of them want to show you what it will do but it's important that YOU do the testing, they can show but you need to try it. Also check with the dealer about classes that are offered-even if they are the basic, "this is what your machine will do" class. All will help you become comfortable with your sewing machine and lead to less frustration as you start out. ENJOY your new hobby! We all do!! and don't be afraid to make mistakes-we all make them sometimes but it doesnt' keep us from enjoying what we love to do.........SEW!! Lyn
