When altering patterns do you; A- Cut & Split your patterns B- Pivot & trace your patterns C- Both If you have done both, which method do you feel works the best? Or does it depend on the pattern itself? |

I cut and split per Fit For Real People. Of course, I am currently working on only my 2nd ever garment with alterations. But my first FBA done according to this method on a simple knit top worked wonderfully Now, on a twist type top, I am STUMPED! (apex below pattern tissue) If anyone can help me, please see garment fitting thread. Jen |

Depends on the pattern for me. If it is a multi-sized pattern that I'm tracing off of then I usually cut and split and then write on the traced pattern what I have done and date and mark who it is for, but my original will still be as I bought it. |

It depends on the pattern and the type of alteration that is needed. Shoulder changes for narrow and wider shoulders, moving, adding darts, adding depth to crotches, hump and sway back, full busts, etc, are alterations where I always split. I sometimes split the sleeves, esp if I need a larger sleeve cap. When making alterations like waist and hips I often add to the outside of the pattern as the pattern companies do because these are alterations that the patterns company make all the time and they are changes that I can make without altering the basic structure of the pattern..
