DD and I are hoping to fly home to Ottawa for Father's Day weekend to visit my dad. It all depends on the flights. They are kinda pricy ... so lookin' into possibly flying to Montreal as it is about 1.5 - 2 hours from home.

We are also hoping to fly to NJ as well to visit family and go to the beach. I think that is starting to look like not a possibility. I would love to be able to go for the Civic holiday weekend (Dad usually come down to NJ at the time especially if we go there).

I can see several weekender trips to the inlaws - farm near Grand Forks, ND area. I am not complaining - they are great people and good to get out of the Twin Cities ...

I will be helping in the handicrafts area at Cub Scout Day Camp, going to an Assistive Technology 3 day Summer institute on St. Simons Island, and the family will be going to North Ga. for a week in July.

The other 5 weeks of my Summer break will be spent doing something about the clutter at my house.

I am planning on getting my garage closed in and made into one or two rooms.
That will help with some of the "clutter" since it will move the office out of the living room. If I get two rooms I will put my sewing machine in one of them. If I don't get to work on the garage I will probably put new tile in the kitchen and paint it. I'll have to send my dh somewhere by himself this summer. That's when I get these home improvements done.

Years ago we did a holiday that was a go where you please. Just get in the vehicle and drive. This yr we are going down south to princeton/b.c. for a hereford association weekend. There is a day of wine touring, then a social and an evening of fun with a line dancing instructor and an auction. After that we are going to explore the area. Just found out on the internet Vernon is having a four day craft fair with 200 artisans there. Hope to take this in. My husband wants to go and see Nelson. It has many historic buildings. I've been checking the internet and we have been planning some of our holiday this way. I'm really looking forward to it. The rest of it is just exploring.

We are taking the caravan down to Bude (Cornwall) and will visit the Eden project http://www.edenproject.com/# - a great way to visit the tropical rainforest without leaving England! We will also visit Tony's parents at Land's End.
We have to be back for the A level results....(Rosie will she get the University of her choice?) and then off to Church Camp http://www.grapevinecelebration.org.uk/ for a generally grand time!
Then = back to school...
We have a few weekends away sorted as well in our little caravan.

We used to do the same as Shirley, just get into the vehicle and drive. One day, pre-kidlings, we decided to go see what was on the other side of Seattle...the next thing you know, we are crossing the Oakland Bay bridge and coming into San Fransisco! Would have continued on to LA, but this was Sunday and we both had to work in the morning. lol
Now our trips comprise of scooting up the Coquihalla to have coffee with DS in Kamloops or SIL in Vernon. Day trippin'.
Trying to convince DH to spend some time on Vancouver Island this year...wanna go to Long Beach and try surfing! lol

That's planning entirely too far ahead! We're talking about maybe doing a weekend trip or two, but nothing too elaborate since Jeff already had to take off all sorts of time when the twins were born. I'm hoping we'll head to Abilene in the fall for my college's 100th anniversary (but that's unlikely). The one thing I know we are doing is going up to Dallas to visit in-laws and see friends.

The only thing in the summer we do is have family from out of town come in about 35 of them for the 4th of July and they usually stay about a week. That's fun it's like a vacation for us to have family here and catch up on old times. Then in Oct we go to the Gulf Coast of Mississippi for Cruisin the Coast. It's a whole week of nothing but cruisin and reminising about the 50's. There are about 5000 - 6000 cars as far back as the early 1900's to the 1970's all prettied up just riding and parking and hanging out all along a stretch of the Gulf Coast for about 35 miles all total. If you want to relive the 40's or 50's head on down to this event. You will see cars from when you dated no matter how old you are. We have a 1930 Ford A Model of course it looks like the hot rod in American Graffati. It's beautiful. It's red and is all hop up with a big engine and big tires. Real sporty. That's our vacation every year. Then there is my sewing convention here in New ORleans in November. www.handsonsewingschool.com

We will be off to Fernie, BC, a cute little Kootenay town where my husband will tackle fly fishing (DS is a fishing guide) and I will go spoil my baby grandson and take some great walks.

We get aways as often as possible. We have a 5th wheel (RV - Magot, Caravan for you). We love to travel and get the best of both worlds...we get to go, but have our home with us. When my husband retires in a couple of years, we will live in the 5th wheel full time and just travel. I have done this before and it is wonderful. It is amazing what you can get inside a 39' 5th wheel with 3 slides!!! While I am at home, have lots of sewing and embroidery to do for the grandkids. Next weekend, we go to Kentucky for a weekend meeting with our camping club. Our camping club is a second family for us. In July we will go to Omaha, NE to see daughters and grandchildren. In August, we have a club meeting close to home (in the mountains of SC) and in October, we go to Myrtle Beach for 2 weeks for a big rally. Our club is hosting the rally, so we will have lots to do to keep us busy before the rally in Oct. We are able to get out during the winter too. SC isn't that cold (usually) and we have several campgrounds that are open year round.

I probably won't get more than a day trip or two. My husband is earning all kinds of vacation time at his new job but getting a chance to take the time is unlikely. It's a new facility and I think the director is trying to look good in the budget department by keeping the staff short. And, at 44, she is pregnant for the first time and always to sick to work herself.
We will be in New York City in early June for my daughter's law school graduation and are taking some extra days so there will be one day for me in the garment district.

We will be making our annual trip to the Midwest this summer. My husband rides RAGBRAI (a week long bicycle ride across the state of Iowa). My brother is getting married the day before that starts so I have to be on one end of Iowa for the wedding then drive like a crazy woman to get my husband to the other side so he can ride his bike back across. I think I may set a record this year for how many times I have driven across the state of Iowa in one month. We will drive across it once when we drive from here to the wedding (1), then I have to drive him back again to start the ride (2), then back across to IL to visit family while he rides (3),then across again to come back home (4). Not to mention we have to drive up to Minnesota while we are in the area because my husband's niece is getting married the same day as my brother so we said we would come up to visit since we couldn't be at two weddings at the same time. UUGH! Just the thought of all that driving is making me tired already. OH and not to mention I will be making all these trips with a 2 yr old, a 4 yr old, a 7 yr old, a 12yr old and a 14 yr old dog. Potty stops take 45 min to an hour and we stop every 2 hours. Every year after we come home I say we aren't going to do it again, but by the time the next year comes around I want to see everybody again.
The trip won't be all bad, once my husband is on the ride I am a free woman. I spend the week letting my kids run the neighborhood that I grew up in. I usually make a couple of trips to the Mighty Mississippi to make sure it is still running east to west. If I can find someone to supervise my rugrats I may tackle a gambling boat. All in all it will be a fun trip.

Gina, I can't imagine it. How many miles is it across the state?

Susy, I've been to Fernie, nice little place.

Sueodyssey, your idea of living in an RV really appeals to me. How do you sew in that thing?

Gina

I lived in Iowa for a couple of years (Des Moines)) That bike ride is really something.! Too bad you have to make so many trips across the state.

Mary, living in the RV is different and not for everyone. Sewing takes some planning, but it can be done. I have an area in the bedroom that I can set the sewing machine. My husband will build me an extra arm for that area that will extend over the bed. That way I can put the surger and sewing machine up at the same time. Storage of course is the biggest problem. But you just learn how much you can take and use at one time. Can't keep a big supply of fabric around, and most of my "extra" things are stored away, so I have to hunt for them at times, but the life style is great. There are no better people around than RV'rs. And being able to travel this wonderful country is more than worth a little crowding. We are in the process of getting the house ready to sell and move into the RV until my husband retires.

Mary,

One thing we want to do is get up to your neck of the woods. We have friends that will be making that trip this summer. We have a medium duty truck (Freightliner) to pull our 5th wheel. These trucks are just a little smaller than an 18 wheeler, but a lot longer and taller than a normal pickup. They are no wider than a dually (the pickups with two wheels on the back)...just wide all the way from the back to the front. With the big truck and the big 5th wheel, there are very few RV parks in the NE and your area that can hold them both. When we are connected, we are about 60' long. A really great way to see the country. Even better to go visit the kids and grandkids. When the grandkids get too crazy, we can escape to the quiet of our home!

Mary,

The bike ride this year is 485 miles with an optional loop that adds about 40 miles to it. They twist and turn, go up and down hills, and all kinds of crazy things. I am not sure what the driving miles for me will be.

suesodyssey,

Did you live in Des Moines or near it? I have family spread out all over Iowa. I don't mind driving across Iowa. It is a beautiful state. I just wish my brother would have used his head and picked the weekend after RAGBRAI (he chose the date because he knew we would be coming anyway). That way I could have dropped hubby off on my way through.

That's one heck of a rig Sues! Our caravan is 17ft but I love getting away in it and having my 'stuff' with me whilst seeing my beautiful country. We just pull ours with the car (Citroen C5 estate) Hope you have a great tour. Tony is talking about going to a star watching weekend with the van, I'm happy to accompany him on this if I can take my sewing! He says the sewing machine weighs too much but you should see his telescope!

Gina - , you're barmy! All that driving with the sprogs! I hope you have a lot of tapes to play in the car.

I figure by the time I get back home I will have added at least 3000 miles to the old odometer.

Jan,

We listen to children's bible songs almost the whole way. Drives my hubby up the wall but the kids and I have a lot of fun singing along. One year we dorve the trip without him and we had such a blast singing at the top of our lungs. We even all picked our favorite animals and barked, meowed and clucked our way through the songs.

Gina,

I lived in Des Moines for about 2 years. Didn't particulary like the city, but Iowa is a pretty state. I liked to get out and drive the countryside around Des Moines. My daughters are now in Omaha, NE...well at least for now. The oldest will be moving to the Denver, CO area about the end of July...another eight hours away!! Oh well, that is why we have the RV...makes for a great trip and I haven't been to CO yet, except to fly through.

Margot,

can imagine you are limited on what you can take. Your caravan is shorter than our truck! But where there is a will there is a way! Just tell your husband if you have your machine with you you won't be running in and out of the various stores and buying things!! Afterall, telescopes to weigh a great deal too!!

I tend to get a lot of knitting done in the van, Sue - means I take less equipment. The telescope also means the camera, the lens, the laptop (to download the photos) I'm wondering about sending him off on his own and staying home to sew - then I don't need to keep putting stuff away.

The daft thing is the van sleeps 5 and we hardly use the back end except to store junk we forgot to take out before we went away. Makes it a good size for just the 2 of us, and it is still a bit big to get through those narrow country lanes so I hate to think what you would do with yours!

I don't knit, but I do crochet and cross stitch. Cross stitching can be a bit wild in the truck, but crocheting is pretty easy. So when I am not driving, I usually have something going. I hate to just sit and ride. We trade off every 3 hours or so. That way we can drive farther and not be terribly tired when we get to where we are going.

After seeing some of the English "country lanes", I can see why you have such small trailers. Of course, you know the US has to be bigger!!! It makes a big difference with our freeways. Most of our "country lanes" are twice the size of English lanes. And then there is that matter of the wrong side of the road!!! I loved my visits to your beautiful country. My oldest grandson was born in Scotland, so we made several trips to the UK. I hope to get back there some day soon.

I am going to have the annual camping trip with my chldren and grandchildren. We haven't planned the dates yet, but it is always fun. One weekend I am hoping to take my oldest GD, she is 5, up to Traverse City to take the trip on the Tall Ship. It is hard to plan many things when you are a caretaker and need to find someone to take over for you. I use to own a Harley and have been all over the United States and Canada.
For the ones who want to be full time RVer's when they can. My folks did that when my dad retired. Did it for 20 years, using my home as the base station. Every summer they would wander back to spend time with us kids, and we were always welcome to come visit them where they were. After 10 years they bought a place in southern Texas to be able to go to in case they needed to rest for a while. They saw so many sites and places, went all the way down to South America. One place they never went to which my dad had wished they did was Africa. They wanted to do the photo trip with a group of Airstreamers, but when it was time Africa was in an unrest and the trip was cancelled. My folks had been in the little war in Central America and that was enough for them. If you can do it, do it, you can't take it with you when you are no longer here.

from a 4 day camping/mushroom hunting trip. We have a truck camper for the two of us. We spent 3 nights in a clearing in the woods (took a very narrow two-tracker road) to get there. It was nice. Saw the northern lights one night and the ISS station fly over. We also will be sailing our sailboat this summer. The first trip will be from Drummond Island to Mackinaw Island for the Lilac Festival. The second trip we are considering sailing up the St. Mary's River to the Soo Locks. We also want to do camping on the weekends in between. We are talking about camping over our 4th of July weekend (locally) with all of our kids. We use to do that when they were younger. We also traveled and camped with them across country when they were younger. Those were the best trips. A lot of fun memories. :bg:
