I had the same trouble at first too but I went to www.acrobatreader.com and downloaded the 7.0 version FREE, and it let me right in to see the block once I did that~ If that doesn't work try this:
http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
This allows your computer to open up a pdf file
Maybe this will help others~

Gonna have fun with this block~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Well I had my block done, and thought I was doing good considering I am working with a shoulder that was injured. I worked on it late in the night. Then I sent the picture off to Joanne and she very nicely asked me to look at it again....I had sewn the tops and bottoms of the spools on upside down! LOL Thank you Joanne for being so nice about it, I know why your the teacher! :bg: I thought it was a bad picture! LOL So I have a new one almost done, sewn together the right way! I like this one better anyway! LOL
I'm letting our puppy Wizzer eat the old block! Just kidding!

Hi Joanne,

For some reason, I can't see the photos on your webpage...Where the photos are supposed to be, I just get those little boxes with the dreaded 'red x'. :bluesad:

Any idea what the problem might be? I know that some members had problems seeing the pictures a week or so ago, but I was seeing them fine then. :nc:

Donna, sometimes the way the browser is set up causes that. Updating should help that out. Other than that I don't know what to say. Don't think refreshing will help but you could try that.

Thanks, Joanne,

We figured out the problem. My Cyber Patrol was insisting that there was something 's**ually explicit' somewhere within the photos! :whacky: :bg: LOL It must be all of those racy flowers.
It was allowing me to go to the page, but not to view the photos. I think I have it fixed now.

Thanks Norma, I figured that I wasn't the only one who has done this. LOL It's funny though, my dd and I were looking at it trying to figure out why it looked different! LOL :nc: I guess sometimes you just need someone else to look at it and say hmmm look at this or that. It's all a part of learning!

I learn a lot faster when I have done it wrong for some reason.........there is just something about the process of figuring out what I did that makes it all clear. I just wish sometimes that the tv shows showed a mistake now and then so we don't all feel like we aren't quite up to par...............

I loved the hands on your block and the thread running from each spool. You can be proud of that for sure!!!

If some of you are having problems piecing please set the block pieces on the table next to your sewing area as it would be sewn. Check it twice to make sure it is the right way up, label if you have to then sew by rows. :bg:

Joanne, you mentioned earlier "...middle of May and only one block?" Good thing you can't see our sewing tables and "the ones that got away..."

I'm glad the triangles weren't any smaller. I must be "triangularly challenged". Pin...sew...check...rip...pin...check again...baste this time...check again...sew over the basting...check again...rip...pin...sigh...drink tea...check...baste again...

Got them done though! One is 6 1/2" square and one is 6 1/2" X 6 1/4" and I can't for the life of me figure out how to get that 1/4 inch back. May I cut the plain block that goes beside it 1/4" wider so that the finished block will be the right size or should I start over? (Note: Please answer carefully in order to win the coveted "Teacher of the Year award".)

The blocks in the albums look great everyone. I love them! Thanks for your prayers, Oklahomanana. I appreciate them (my hands hurt so bad). Surgery has been delayed until June 7th - so I may even get the next block done as well - unless it has triangles that is!!! :dave:

Thanks Norma, Oklahomanana and all for the compliments on my block! :bluesmile Want to know a secret??? The hands were the easy part for me! LOL It was the spools I was having issues with! :whacky: I was like you, sew baste, stare at it, tear it out, do it again to find out nothing had changed! LOL By the time our wonderful teacher (buttering up for an easy June block) asked me to look at it and what part I had tore it out so many times I made a new one! LOL :nervous: That one went much easier for me, so it was worth it! Hang in there ladies I know you can do it if I can!!
Joanne I was just kidding, you are a wonderful teacher, thank you! :bg:

Whew! These Advent blocks are challenging...but fun! As usual, I learned a lot. My block is ready to be photographed and sent off to you, teach! I am happy with it, althought it is, to use a term my best friend uses, "kittywunkle".

Perhaps I need new glasses...or better fabric scraps...as things are, as you will see, a little "off-kilter". I've done it over so many times that today I said, "That's it. You are done. Not perfect...but as close as I can get you."

I like my block just the way it is. I'm a bit kittywunkle myself these days!

Barb and M&M: I hope you get into your sewing room soon too Barb. I would be having withdraws if I couldn't sew each day! LOL M&M, I bet your block will be fine. I messed up on my very first one(the red and green one) and I made myself go back and re- do it tonight~ I had measured wrong for one, and the other was ,just me I think not having enough patience with it. But I got her done tonight and have a second spool block on its way to Joanne. This was a challenge this month for me, but that's how we all learn right? The more I do of them, I learn and like them better. I am thinking now OF course of a quilt with themed spool blocks! LOL~~~~~~~~~~~ I have to still be having some of my headache I had earlier, Or must of taken a crazy pill to think of this!!!!!!!!!!! LOL! :bluewink: Well it is late and I best be off to bed. Just keep practicing ladies and it is does get easier! yeah I can say that now, mine are done, right!!!!!!!!!!!! ROFL~ :bluewink:

The spool blocks all look great! I'm going to try and work on mine this weekend-will be WAY TOO HOT to go outside this weekend! As Norma says, summer has hit! We are supposed to have record breaking heat this weekend and into next week. I have the pattern and instructions all printed out but had been working on the signature block swap and making some outfits for my granddaughter.

Well done people, you can start to see the secondary patterns you could get if you use this block all over - I love that in a quilt. Hopefully I will finish getting mine done this weekend and send the piccies off, but at the moment I am Mad Decorating Woman - have to get DD room finished before she gets back from Uni next weekend.

Hi Everybody,
Thanks for the kind compliments. Triangles are my bane, but the block was still fun.
Last night my husband was busy at the computer so I asked him to please download my block pic from the camera and send it off to Joanne when he had time.
When he came to bed he said, "I sent that picture off for you - and by the way - I fixed your block."
"You fixed my block???"
"Yeah," he said, looking rather pleased with himself, "It was kinda' wonky so I used a program to crop and rotate it so it looks square. I softened the edges a bit, too, so they didn't look so uneven. I couldn't figure out how to touch up the color though."
"What??? What??? What??? You 'fixed' my block!?! I already told everybody it was crooked. This is quilt school. We're all learning. It doesn't have to be perfect."
"Now why, he asked, rolling over and pulling up the blankets, "would you ever want anyone to see that block the way it was. It's easy to fix!"

Ah, husbands...bless their hearts. If only "fixes" were so easy at the sewing machine!

Happy Quilting

M & M...I am laughing at your posting. You sound like me "you what?" mine now knows better than to touch anything on my computer lol

I bet if everyone goes and takes a look at the block they made they will see improvements from one block to the next. You are are right, it is a learning process and I think everyone is doing so well with it all.

Jan, Air conditioning is how you survive here from May to Oct. You go from your air conditioned house to your air conditioned car to your air conditioned store, and so on and on. My sister lives in the Colo. mountains and was saying how the air conditioning here in the summer was the same as the furnace there in the winter and it is true. We have low electric in the winter and very high in the summer.

Life is a little rough when it goes out.......not sure how people lived here before air conditioning. It is so much fun to fix your hair and put on make up, get in the hot car and look in the mirror to see flat hair and the make up has run down to your chin..................Oh well, Joann's is nice and cool so I spent a hour or so there last night just wandering around................................

Right now I envy your warm temperatures...tonight it is supposed to be 6°C and 16°C tomorrow - that is approx. 42°F and 60°F. Normally, at this time of year the furnace is turned off but not this year! Mine still starts up during the nights! I've been living here since 1991 and I have never had it run this late in the spring.

Record heat today! 106! Go from a/c house to a/c car to a/c office (store, etc) back to a/c car & a/c house. only go out after dark (and it is still 95 @ 9:30 pm now) or very early in the morning! The movie theaters do a booming business here in the summer!

Think I'll stay in tomorrow and work on my spools for my blocks.

Hey Norma, come on over-bring your sewing machine! I keep my a/c @ 80 and my bills are still ridiculous! I think we are in for a really bad summer-bad enough with the fire danger so high but the heat sure isn't going to help anything!

Thanks Lyn...........think you are right about the summer going to be a hot one..............and in spite of the huge cost involved, we are getting a new unit to replace the 19 year old one. It lived a good and full life!! LOL

I want to sew so bad but we are just staying here until it is unbearable and leaving. I took the grandkids home to their house yesterday and will do so this week if the guy can't patch it together long enough to order the new one.

Keep cool or warm everyone, which ever applies for your area...........guess nothing is perfect anywhere.

Jo..........is 106 temps and no air conditioning a good excuse for not doing my block yet? (you have got to give me credit for being orginal anyway!! LOL)

OKNana...........my mil will be complaining for sure when we talk to her this weeked...............she could hardly wait to move back to OK and had done nothing but complain about the weather since..........it is either too hot or too cold or rainy or snowy or something.................

Ok off to something a/c...............like the MALL!!

Rain and hail here ladies, daft ain't it.
Joanne, I have sent you my Monochrome Mess of a spool block. I am frustrated that I cannot see how to line up my checks when cutting out. Can you give us hints when we are pressing as to whether we are supposed to press open/to one side/towards the middle etc. so as to help with the seam build up. This was good and stretching, thank you. This whole thing is a learning process and on the whole I am quite pleased with the way the lot are turning out. Tony is just cooking me steak and potato wedges and sweetcorn and we are about to watch Dr Who. I have spent the afternoon sewing and he has watched the FA Cup Final (Arsenal won in penalties - a sad way to win) Can life get better than this - I know - I'll open the beer!

Jan your block is up. For pressing seams this is one way of doing it. When you do your rows, press the seams to one side, now just line up the second row and press that row opposite. This will help with the bulk.

You chose some hard fabrics to do but turned out pretty good :bluewink:

I did block five.............dear Joanne, you will make a quilter out of me for sure. I did learn something, I do NOT have the patience it would take to make a whole quilt with blocks that have lots of small triangles!! Those little buggers drove me crazy. They made up ok but they take so much time!!! Maybe someday when there aren't a dozen other things I want to do. :bolt:

So while I was at it I did block four too...........finally. Just stopped fighting the fabric and went with it. Thanks Jan for your suggestions.......they helped.

Will send pictures tomorrow Jo.

Can't believe I am all caught up with days left in the month...............so June has no triangles, right Joanne??????? :bg:

I had to do triangles for another project, and Eleanor Burns name came up and it triggered a memory.. She has a production line method of constructing squares with triangles.. I tried it.. Worked great.. So, now I think I'm ready to tackle the spools again.. My first one went out with the garbage..Basically what Eleanor did was make them oversize to start with and then cut them to size with a square ruler.. In other words if you need 3 1/2 inch finished square of 2 triangles. start with 2- 4 1/2 inch squares RST. Draw diagonal line with pencil, then sew 1/4 inch from the pencil line.. cut on line press, and voila you have 2 squares ready to be sized to 3 1/2 block finished.. ( you have to match seam with the 45 degree marking on the ruler, of course) I doubt if any one else had as much trouble as I did, but just wanted to share my solution :nc: :bg: :bg: ..

Oh Libby, next to Joanne, Eleanor Burns is my quilting hero! LOL

I was comfortable with the method I used but the cutting, trimming, pinning, sewing, pressing, trimming.................of 16 little squares took over a hour and while it was ok for one block, can't imagine making a full sized quilt that had that many per block. (this from someone who hand traced with a template and cut out and hand sewed enough hexagones to make a full sized Grandmother's garden quilt top...........some days I have more patience that others apparently! LOL)

Looking forward to June...........come on Jo, give us GOOD hint this month!

Too when are you going to double up blocks to give us a chance to get done in time to finish up for Christmas...........or are you going to do that???

It wasn't that long ago that the idea of me making anything 'quilty' was just plain silly. If someone had told me that I would be constructing blocks with (gasp) TRIANGLES, well, that would have just been ludicrous! I never thought I'd see the day! :whacky:

You are right Donna, I don't want to make a quilt with a lot of little triangles but now I know how if I ever need to...............

That said I wonder what lesson we are learning with June.............hummmmm, is there something harder than triangles...........Oh dear........................

I had read somewhere about the 7/8 inch to add, but never saw a picture of it.. I could not figure out how it was done.. Now I see, its on both sides.. No more confusion.. Thanks, I made a hard copy of that page..

Barry???
Barry???
Barry???

As in "the June block is barry nice"???

Barry, Montana?
Barry, Illinois?
Barry, Texas?

Barry: British architect who designed the Houses of Parliament in London (1839)?

A basket block full of "barries"?

Hmmmmm...had a crush on a Barry back in grade nine...

I'm stumped.
Joanne, you are barry tricky!!!

Thanks teacher for the compliment. I'm using up scraps and fabric in my stash. The sewing/craft fabric was from a couple of fat quarters that I had purchased on clearance from a store called Ben Franklin. I used the fabric originally to make a couple of fabric bowls. I have one of them in my sewing room, that collects things, until I sort through it. I couldn't help but to use it with this block. The saying on the one fits me to a tee. "So many projects, so little time". :re:

Have a great day!

Kit, your spool blocks are up. I applaud you doing the one large spool, very nice and the combination of textures on your second block is very good.
