After several years of living with me and this quilting thing...........my husband threw a pair of denim shorts in the TRASH!! I followed behind and told him there were lots of great quilt blocks in those even with the small tear in them. He just shook his head..............LOL So beings I don't want to save the shorts, what is a good size for a denim quilt block? Not sure what I want to do with them, can you mix denim with a lighter weight fabric like flannel or homespun with out major problems? Is it better to do a ragged edge quilt or could I just do regular seams? He had better be careful, he will go to get a pair of jeans out of the closet and they will have squares cut out of them................. Norma |

My MIL makes denim quilts. I don't know what size squares--maybe 6 or 7 inch squares. The whole top of the quilt is in denim. I don't remember if she puts anything in between squares, but if she does, it must be denim too, because what I remember most about the quilts is that the whole top was denim, although cut from many pairs of jeans, so many colors and slightly different weights. The backings were cotton or cotton blend. |

Thanks everyone..............I think I will measure and see what would be the best size to get the most squares out of the shorts.............and the rest of the jeans in the family aren't safe!! LOL Might hit Goodwill one day and see what I can find there. We don't need the heavy quilts here in AZ but think it would be great to put in the camper. So add another project to the lonnnnnnng list but this one was all hubby's fault! Norma |

Ask at the Goodwill store what they do with the jeans that are too far gone to sell. That is where my instructor in our quilting class got the ones we used for our rag quilts.. They gave them to her..We found plenty of good spots to get squares from..

Where are my jeans? I'm missing three pairs. Did you take them? Are they hidden in your sewing room? I made one denim rag quilt and I'm currently working on another. So he is accusing me of stealing his jeans for the project. I wouldn't take any of his favorite "worn" jeans to use for my quilt. Happy sewing/quilting/crafting

I have to tell you there are a couple of pair in his closet that he should donate to my cause but they will have to get holes in them before it will happen So I have another question..........I have a couple of pairs of old jeans that are made from stretch denim. Can I mix stretch denim with regular jean denim for my quilt blocks? I am sure as old as they are there is not much stretch left in them but wondered if it would cause problems? What do you think ladies? Ok Liz, fess up, where ARE his missing jeans???? Norma |

Hi, I have almost finished my 3rd denim rag quilt and I used some stretch denim on the first one. It didn't work well at all because it wouldn't fray and kind of hangs funny in those spots. I did mix in some drapery fabric in the second one and that worked great, even though it was a bit lighter weight than denim. Also, best to use 1/2 seams instead of 1/4, rag or not, as denim frays. Any size would be great, I did a 9 x 5 inch rectangle one and the one I am working on for my grandson is 8 1/2 squares, embroidery or photos on each square. Its turning out great, so far. |

I'm in the process of making this circle jeans quilt on this site...its been fun. I went with a sort of nine patch pattern with it. I plan to tie a piece of flannel or fleece on to the back right now but when I finish the top I will decide for sure if I want to go that route or just leave it plain...its going to be heavy the way it is! http://quilting.about.com/library/0lib/bl0jeans_gallindex.htm blue jeans - denim quilt gallery - quilters recycle and use up old jeans |

I have used old jeans to make rag quilts, kitchen rugs, a mat for the dog's cage... if I want a batting in the middle I find what works best for me is the iron-on fleece.. its thin enough to work okay for rugs etc. and give just a little extra padding underfoot... just my 2 cents... MO life is too short, not to explore
