This is a washing problem. My dear Husband has one armpit that sweats more than the other one. Whether this means he sprays that armpit more with deodourant or not I don't know - but the fabric on his shirts (polycotton) goes very stiff and papery and they become sore to wear. Does anyone have any ideas on how to soften up the fabric again - we simply end up throwing the shirts away as I cannot get them wearable again.

I have come across a method of removing the white stains from shirts - crush 3 aspirin into i teaspoon of tartaric acid and mix to a paste. Apply the pase tothe pits and leave for 1 hour bfore washing as normal. I have yet to try this.

Any ideas?
love and kisses, Jan

Wow...weird problem....well.....has he tried UNSCENTED or fragrance free deoderant ??? Sometimes the scent in the stuff makes for BAD stains and things in cloth (I got my neighbor across the street to do this and her and her kids don't have the stain problem anymore).

As for the stain...have you tried the new 'Oxy' clean stain removers ??? (do you get them there ???) (uses 'oxygen' to clean stains). White vinegar and soda might help. We have a company called 'Rit' here that sells stain removers, color removers, and dye....I always find those work...

Let me research some more...

Magot, what happens with pure cotton shirts? Seems to me it might be a deodorant brand that is the culprit. What is it he uses?

Has he tried using an Antiperspirant Deoderant stick? I only recently became aware that some deoderants do not have Antiperspirant in them...but it will say right on the label if it has both. Also, I don't know how well they work, but there are these natural crystal deoderants that may be worth a try too.

Also, I have had very good luck with Shout on stains.

I've used Vanish(similar to shout tried that too - no good) At the moment I am soaking his armpits (!) in vinegar. He uses a variety of sprays - Tesco's own, Rightguard, Adidas....depending on whats on offer at the time. Blesss him, he's always smells good to me!
I can't get him to use sticks and since our daughter has gone down the hippy trail and rubs herself with the stone type things there is no way I'm going to get Tony to do that. Love that girl, but she pongs.
He doesn't wear pure cotton shirts so we're a bit stuck on answering that one.
I will try out the Oxy route and see how we got. Thanks for the sugestions ladies.

I have found that Dawn dishsoap works on stains for me. Just rub some on and throw it in the washer.

Have you tried adding underarm dress shields to his shirts? If the shirts aren't too thin they probably wouldn't show and might help to protect the shirts.

Good luck!

Jan

This seems to be a general problem with polycotton shirts - doesn't seem to happen with the 100% cotton ones (which are a pain to launder - I like the easy-care, wash, tumble dry and hang up with no ironing variety).

We can get Oxyclean here (Asda and Tesco sell it) and it will get the shirts beautifully white (I use it for those lovely  white formal school shirts our kids have to wear in the UK) but I'm afraid does nothing for the fabric softness and can sometimes aggravate eczema. Have you tried a soak in bi-carb?

Have you tried Sure 24-hour? Has no alcohol in it and doesn't appear to start off eczema/other dermatological attacks.

There's some useful tips for stain removal on here - might be worth a look if you've not already come across it.

I use a product called GOOP. Honestly, that is the name. It is sold in the automotive section of Wal-Mart as a hand cleaner. It is the best thing I have ever used for removing stains. I have even used it on knit shirts that have grease stains that have gotten buy and been set in with the dryer. GOOP gets the stains out! Don't know anything about it making fabric softer or not.

Jan, don't know if you can get this product in the UK, but it would be worth a try. I don't even keep Shout or any other pre-treater around now...Just good ole GOOP!!

Goop works on everything. I used to use it on my son's football uniform. I have even used on the counter tops. Of course, using it in the house for everything means there isn't much to use in the garage when working on cars.

Did some research....

equal parts of ammonia and water, soak over night...
vinegar (I already said that, but I read that in MANY hint sites)
enzymatic detergent (let it soak in before washing)

using one of those 'deodorant stones' found in health food stores. ( I donno...I was in the Dr's office once and they said it really works for those who have excessive persperation)

My husband was one of those spray users too....I told him if he was gonna keep that up, he'd deal with the stains on his shirts...he took my advice and got Mitchum ( Mennens unscented stick) and no problems with shirt stains anymore. (and since he has a job where he has to wear dress shirts all the time, his shirts are stain free, no matter what the color)

Thanks Chrys - I was soaking in lemon juice last night - still got armpits like cardboard. I thought it would be gentler than vinegar to start with. Using amonia is using an alkali instead of an acid - if the acid doesn;t work it is possible the alkali will. The stuff is so built up that the enzymatic detergent doesn't wet any more.

I cannot convince him not to use the spray and use a stick - drives me barmy . Mind you - it does mean I have a huge supply of ex shirts for quilting!
Thanks for all the suggestions - I'll keep you posted.

Nice try Dot, he sneaks out and buys his own toiletries.

I just wash the shirts until then turn to cardboard and then we throw them away. He's the one stressing over the armpits...my arms work....

I cannot get him to even think about wearing dress shields!!!

We have been invited to a Pink Party - everybody has to wear something pink - I can't even get him to wear a pink tie - I might get away with a breast cancer ribbon. There were a load of guys trying on pink mens t's inthe shops this weekend - taking the pee out of them selves and insisting that real men don't do pink....

My grandfather (who was 1/2 American Indian) LOVED color...I have pictures of him wearing matching pink or yellow sweater vests and socks....(no my grandmother didn't make him dress that way) He LOVED to get dressed up and he had the tall, lean body that looked good in almost anything.

Now my Dad was another story....the ONLY time he wore a suit, was to his own wedding....he liked t-shirts and jeans. Once-in-awhile we'd get him in a sweater, but not for long....he didn't even care what color his clothes were.
(and no he wasn't color blind)

Jan...tell your husband it's 2005 and we all know he's macho enough to wear PINK !!!!!!! (I make my husband buy pink, and lavender shirts to wear with his grey suit....ties to match....the only color he WON'T wear is green...and I dont' know why....maybe it's all those years in BDU's)

[QUOTE=Chrysantha]Did some research....
......
enzymatic detergent (let it soak in before washing)"

using one of those 'deodorant stones' found in health food stores. ( I donno...I was in the Dr's office once and they said it really works for those who have excessive persperation)

As a nursing instructor for many years I had many students with perspiration problems, odor and discolouration, especially when white poly cotton uniforms were in. Those young ladies and gentlemen get very nervous. I always recommended the enzymatic route as it works on protein stains (like body secretions). I also use the product for infant clothing cleanins. I was able to clean up a favourite white t shirt of my daughter, but not all that well as she was using a creamy based deodorant and had washed and dried it many times before asking for help. Spray some of your husbands deodorant and see if it is creamy on the skin.

FYI - I also perspire a lot, but on my head and my hair seems to always be wet. Fortunately I have curly hair. I asked my physician about the stone deodorant, as roll on tends to leave behind a white line on my forehead - making for interesting makeup. Physician said it doesn't work well for heavy perspiration.

FFYI - another nurse hint - use cheap hair spray to get ball point pen ink out (tends to leak into pockets).

I now use the oxyclean (without detergent) to soak or pour through stains with great luck. Oxyclean is a hydrogen peroxide cleaner.

Isn't Goop rather expensive for clothing cleaning? And doesn't it have an orange solvent base? You now can buy orange solvent cleaners, but I only use it on furniture! Many of my friends swear by something they call the Pink Stuff (very pricey but use it on everything)

Good luck and let us know what works. :Canada:

I don't think it is the perspiration that is the problem so much as the build up of spray deodourant on the garment that has turned it to cardboard. I soaked in Zxyclean for 12 hours and I have the item drying now but I have a feeling not a ha'porth of difference. I may resort to solvents to see if I can get the stiffness out.

I'll get him in pink, Chrys, never fear!

Jan this might be a crazy question but...
Have you tried soaking them in full strength fabric softener?

I have the same stiffness problem with poly-cotton bed sheets and my bed wetter. Nothing has helped me. I just toss out the sheets. It seems that maybe it is something with the polyester. 100% coton sheets don't do it.

If you can't get him to wear 100% cotton, you could try to trick him. Save the tags from his old shirts and go buy him some cotton ones then sew the old tags into the new shirts. As long as you can iron them (use a little spray starch) when he isn't watching he might never notice the difference.

Now I have this totally radical idea....knock him out....shave his armpits, put on some stick deodorant and dress him in a pink shirt, socks and tie !!!
:bolt: :dave:

When my husband used to ride (he was a bicycle racer ala Lance Armstrong, no he wasn't famous, so don't ask...) He used to shave his legs. (just in case he crashed and needed first aid, it was easier without all the hair). I gotta tell ya....I don't like R E A L L Y hairy men.....but those shaved legs made my skin crawl a bit... :bg:

thought... could this just be a chemical (either body or deoderant) reaction with the polyester in the fabric turning the polyester brittle? or maybe the warmth of the armpit turning the polyester fabrics brittle? In that case it won't matter what you do, it will never get soft again.

Jan.. I have the same problem with my ds.. he also has heavy perspiration and uses a roll-on deodorant/antiperspirant... after a while the armpits of his dress shirts get like cardboard and discolor.... I'll be very interested in hearing if you finally find a solution to this... I've tried all the stain removers I can think of... but I have to admit, I haven't tried the enzymatic cleaners or presoakers.. (ex. BIZ) maybe I'll try that next... I'll keep you posted...

Tony and I had this conversation last night:
"You managed to soften them up a bit before - what did you do last time?"
"Beat them against a rock for 1/2 and hour and I have better things to do with my time"
"Ah, the old ways are the best..."
"The river is that way..."

mumble mumble shirts mumble

Gina, I don't buy his shirts, he does and cotton ones a really expensive here - guess who gets to iron them.....(It's all part of our household division of labour)
Dorothy - the thought that people across the world are discussing Tony 'pits makes me giggle thanks!

Chyrs - I have suggested again the stick deodourant - he complains it glues the hairs under his arms together into spikes...now, he has this nice new beard trimmer that he has offered to customise MY hair with (!) perhaps the boot should be on the other foot. He did use a roll on yesterday and the sight of my man standing in the bedroom smelling his shirts to see how it went is too much the stereotypical Macho Man for me.

I've got a nice pink razor......

Oh, man! The feet! I have a friend who told me to use Right Guard Sport stick deodrant on the feet. That particular deodrant is supposed to help that a LOT.

About the shirt. My husband's shirts do that also BUT he wears t-shirts with sleeves which are cheaper to throw away. It at least saves the shirt. I really do think that it has to do with a deodrant build up but I don't know. It may actually be something else because my son't shirts do not do that.

I am fortunate; the feet, while scrawny, boney and with mishapen toes like mangled sausages, smell sweet.

I'm glad this is keeping you amused, people. Tony was quite bemused that a plethera of middle aged (and other) women are discusing his armpits with great sagacity. We remain, however, unable to combat the problem...any more for any more?

Jan, the Dr. told my Mom to swab under her arms with rubbing alcohol on a cotton pad before she applied deod. to keep it from harming her clothing.. He said it was a chemical reaction with some folks, and no way to stop it but the alcohol was supposed to help. It helped my Mom.. She would laugh and say she was only human a shower would not clean under her arms and she had to do the alcohol thing..

Now you see ladies, I'm not on here for two days and I miss everything. I have the solution to your problem Jan. All the models use alcohol under the armpits. Just plain rubbing alcohol. It kills the bacteria that causes the smell. It doesn't leave a residue behind either. The spray stuff has some sort of waxy substance in it causing your problem. I use Sure and I have no problems but I can still feel it under my arms after a long period (24 hours) of time and if I don't wash really well under the arms with soap the next time I bathe it's still on my skin. I don't know about getting the stains out, I have a really bad problem with my socks. I tend to run outside stocking feet all the time and ruin all my good socks. If you can find a way to get those suckers clean let me know, I'm tired of thowing perfectly good socks away just because the bottoms of them look filthy. :re:

I've done that too Libby. The dark ones usually wind up getting put in the white wash by accident and they look like fuzzy terry cloth black and white spotted socks with the lint. I can't win. Today my back porch is hugh and I cleaned it with bleach to get the crud off it from not being used that much all winter. When I came in I had a white towel on the floor by the door to wipe my feet, I was barefoot this time, last time I had a rug by the back door and stepped on it and after a little while my pretty green rug had white foot prints all over it from the bleach on my feet. I was smart this time and got a white towel and put it down before I went out. Sometimes the harder lessons are the ones we don't forget.

Jan, How long does these shirts last before you are having to throw them out? Men are something, they think us women are hardheaded look at some of the things they do, or won't do I should say. My hubby wears a white tee under his shirts even in the hottest summer that white tee is under his shirt.

Jan if you get him to shave, that would make a good photo moment to share with us. ROFL

Susie my dh does the same thing with his white work socks. I use a mixture of Dollar General All Fabric Dry Bleach (without chlorine), Dollar General Laundry Stain Remover and Purex (without bleach) laundry detergent and soak them for about 3 or 4 hours. His socks always come out nice and white unless he does them and then I have to intervene and rewash them.

Magot, my dh also has the same problem with his dress shirts. He wears dress shirts on Sunday mornings, weddings, funerals, etc. As soon as he takes one off, I make him spray it with the Laundry Stain Remover and put it in the laundry basket. Otherwise, he ends up with stained and hardened underarms in his dress shirts and he uses the Mennen 24/7 anti-perspirant/deodorant.

I have a solution for the sock problem.. ! Don't wear any !!! :bg:
I'm one of 'those' people who are barefoot all the time (except when I have to wear shoes to the stores, etc.), then I wear zori's (thongs). I think I've worn a pair of shoes 3-4 times this year.....
My mother used to tell me I refused to wear shoes from the time I was born...
(now THAT I believe)
So my socks are always clean (yes I do own LOTS of pairs...to match my t-shirts, in case I HAVE to wear shoes.)

I spray my husbands socks with those new Oxy-Clean sprays....seems to work pretty well...(yeah....he's one of those I gotta wear shoes and socks all the time, people)

Wow I'll have to try that. Does it work on socks that have been washed and dried already? Mine have been washed and bleached over and over and they are still filthy looking. I'll try anything. Paige has been on my deck with her little white socks and we had to throw away her little socks yesterday but today I kept them and am washing them so when she comes next time she can put the nasty looking ones on out there and her Mom doesn't have to throw any more away.

Mother in law said
"Jan if you get him to shave, that would make a good photo moment to share with us. ROFL"

I have been thinking the same thing. The less 'tissue' there is to be covered with deodorant, the less left on the shirt. :bolt: Who would know? How serious is he about comfortable shirts? Bikers sure are serious about shaving their legs and don't seem to worry about what people say.

One nice thing about aging as a woman is that there is little hair on legs and armpits to worry about! :re:

Growing eyebrows on your chin, it's getting worse! I once mascared my moustache to see what I would look like - it was scarey - my younger brother stared back at me through the mirror! I can never wax the thing off very efficently so often end up shaving.

I think she would have been more effective putting the wax on my upper lips but she put it on my chin and made me have more hair to pull then at first.

Jan I'd love to see the painted moustache. Can you send pics. We could make wanted posters out of them. :dave: I'm so bad!!!!

I'm off to a sewing guild meeting tonight. I'm going to learn how to make chinele (sp?) That's all I need in my life more lint. My Mother use to hate the bedspreads made out of that with all the lint. She was a perfectionist and my messy ways drove her crazy. We were truly Oscar and Felix, the odd couple.

Old wives tale Susie, pulling them out doesn't make them grow more.

Have fun with the chenille - it always seemed more work than was necessary to me!
