I am interested in making some kind of "beading" projects ... not necessarily necklaces or whatnot ... I am interested in making some stuff maybe bracelets and fobs (I have noticed that is becoming popular - fobs are "jewelry" for scissors - at least that's what I am told). If you are not sure what a fob is or want to see what a fob is ... I can take a picture and post it on my photo album and show you ...

I am wondering what are involved with this ... I am not lookin' into making for profit ... more for a "hobby" or in addition to gifts with the quilts/cards, etc.

I am more interested in adding beads with ribbons (more specifically - pink ribbon for breast cancer).

Any feedback and suggestion would be greatly appreicated.

TIA (thanks in advance).

You know, Brenda, those flip flops could have a pink ribbon with beads added to them, wrapped around them, or something... you could get pink ones! Or, there is that one web site someone gave me that has breast cancer flip flops that you can order! I'm REALLY into those flip flops, can you tell? You could do hair scrunchies somehow, too!

There is a bead shop near here where they sell, among other things, fantastic charted patterns for seed beads. They are a lot like cross stitch charts and use, I believe, the peyote technique. The results are incredibly beautiful. They also sell all sorts of beautiful beads that cost everything from a few pennies each to $20 or more each.

Michaels craft shop has MORE beads than you can count these days...I was in the other day and they had scads of new ones....some are glass with ribbons through in teal, pink, black, yellow. They also have 'figure' beads.
Shoes, stars, etc....

Is this the type of fob you are talking about?

Thanks for the link ... that is interesting. I don't know how to make it (using tools and such) and I checked Michael's in my area ... no beading class for the rest of this month ... but I will check June see if they have any.

BRG,

Beading is very easy, I taught myself with the help of a Klutz book.
Klutz beading books (http://www.klutz.com/catalog/category.php?cat=5)
I have the Bead Rings and the Bobby pins books. From those I learned the basics and then I started donwloading free patterns from the net.

Here's where I bought all my supplies (http://www.craftsetc.com/Store/ShowCategory.aspx?d=85&c=-1&s=-1)

That is great!!
I love to bead as well!! I wanted to make one of those for the Scavenger Swap but never got around to it!!
Those scissor fobs are a sure fire way to make people aware that "those" are your good scissors!!
Thanks for sharing the photo~

To start out I wouldn't invest in a lot of expensive beads. When I was teaching jewelry making classes I started my students out with plastic "pony beads" (the glass version of the same type of bead is called a "crow bead.") I also sometimes taught with wooden beads. The fancier beads are not only more expensive, but glass, crystal, etc. can break. I also don't recommend starting out with "seed beads", loom weaving and the like.

You might even want to start out with a simple "kit" for one beading project -- available at your local craft store. But a very basic beginners class is probably the best place to start. I had a blast when I was teaching beading, but believe it or not most of my classes were full of teenaged boys. They figured out they could make jewelry and sell it to the girls.
