Are there any home schoolers out there?
I'm writing a story about a home school kid admitted to RIT and I'm looking for some kind of organization that might have information on things like how many kids are home schooled (nationally -- maybe broken down by state), how many go to college, that sort of thing.
Any thoughts?
This family will probably have that information but I'm going to be pushing a tough deadline before the kid is available to interview so I'd like to get the background in the bag first.
The story is for a regional newspaper's weekly lifestyle type section.
Thanks,
Dorothy

Here are a few sites that I used when homeschooling my kids. Not sure if any of them have what you are looking for but the first two are the most likely ones to have what you want.

Thanks Pudge
One of the sites has an email address for a media relations guy. That's exactly what I need.

I am from Canada and I am not sure if home schooling is done the same here, but many people I know did it by using the correspondence course thru the school district. I am not a teacher and I wanted my son to get the best education he could. He has now finished his first yr in college.

The reason he did home schooling is because he had to drive on a school bus that I know had drugs sold in it. He was also teased constantly about his weight. Actually ended up in a fight which he did not start. Six boys ganged up on him. But I never regret doing it. When your children are at school every day you don't get to know them and they don't get to know you. He and I have the best relationship of all my children. I wish I had home schooled my other two.

Shirley, what grades did your son take thru correspondence? How did he get his marks for the end of the year?

My son did 7,8,9, in correspondence. He wanted to go back in grade 10. It was a bit hard to adjust, only because homeschoolers are frowned upon. He had papers that he had to do and we had to send them to a teacher who graded them. I had to monitor tests, but I did monitor all his schooling so that was nothing different.

Thanks everyone. The media rep for the Home School Legal Defense Association called me this morning with great information and I was able to file my story just a minute ago.
They have started running my stories on line -- they are, as a general rule, in print in a weekly tabloid in the regular newspaper --so if you would like I could post a link. They run on Thursday, hopefully I'll remember.
This was a great kid, real sharp.
Thanks again.

Shirley, I applaud your efforts for your son.

I may look into this next year. My grandson has Asperger's Syndrome. I wondered what was involved. My problem is that he also needs the social environment. I have to weigh which is most important, education and finding his niche vs social.

Home schooling like anything has its pros and cons. Here at least in Mich home schoolers also have to be enrolled in some social activities. They can choose what they want from sports to drama to music, you get the idea. Their attendence is kept track of, and like going to school they can only miss so many. I had to evaluate children who were home schooled for many years. I had to give them the battery of test and make sure they had socialization skills. If they went into school for high school, they were treated differently, but most adjusted. One of the things the children would say is that they were entering a school where friendships had been formed, and sometimes it was hard to make friends. The ones who had friends from the school they were entering had an easier time. This was something we tried to have the parents of the home schooled children do. Have them make friends with the regular schooled children, attend the functions if possible. This way if they entered school, they had some base to stand on.
