Hi!! I am new to this board and it looks very informative and helpful. I am also a beginner sewer. I have been taking a sewing class and have a sewing machine that my grandma sold me for $20. It is a Brother LS-1217. Well it has been giving me nothing but trouble. I know it is the machine, because last week at class I used one of the Park Districts Singers and I got a TON done. So I decided a couple nights ago that it was time to go Sewing Machine shopping. I had narrowed my search down to 2 machines and went abnd purchased this one:

First one:
Singer 1120 (http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.gsp?product_id=3616653)

This was the other one I was considering Second one:
Janome Machine (http://tinyurl.com/98b57)

Does anyone have any reviews good or bad about the Singer 1120. I have a budget of about $150 to spend on a machine. I also don't want anything to fancy yet as I am only a beginner. Will the Singer 1120 work as a beginner model or does anyone have a good suggestion for a good machine for under the $150 range?

THANKS for your help!! Looking forward to getting to know you all better and learning much more!!

I don't know anything about the Singer machine, but I can vouch for the Janome brand! I have owned 2 Janome machines, both embroidery/sewing machines, so they are on the higher end of what you are looking for. However, I highly recommend the Janome brand from bottom of the line to top of the line. Janome seems to manufacture good quality machines. You can check out their machines on their website.

I can't quite tell from the ads whether or not either of these machines has a drop in bobbin, but for me, that is an important feature. Both of my Janomes have that feature and I like it much better than the front load bobbin, which is in a case and hidden from view when you're sewing.

Also, I would highly recommend that you purchase a machine from a reliable dealer in your area. You will need good dealer support, no matter which machine you choose to purchase. Basically, test driving machines and finding the one that is right for you and your sewing needs is the best way to go in my opinion. I've always said that you have to "bond" with your sewing machine. :bg: It really does make a difference--if you like your machine, and it's the right one for you, then your sewing experience will be more positive and much less frustrating.

Sears Kenmores are Janomes and are usually a very good price. I see now that on line Sears is also selling Simplicity machines and I don't know if they are selling them in their stores and out numbering their Kenmores since the Kmart Sears merger. I really feel the Kenmores have excellent features for the price with the good Janome quality.
