I've been sewing for more years than I care to mention, but have just spent half the morning trying yet again to perfectly insert a zipper in a seam. I've tried all of the suggestions in my reference library, but still I'm not satisfied with the result. Please, does anyone have a new idea?

You do not describe what is wrong with it.. My first thought is , if you sew down one side and back up the other, it usually does not look good to me.. So, I sew down each side or up each side.. always looks better that way.. and I hold zipper in place with small lengths of scotch invisible tape about every 2 inches.. I also sew on ws so that I can use that line on the zipper fabric as my guide.. My Janome's stitches are just as pretty on bobbin side as needle side, so its OK to do that..

Maybe that's the secret - I've always sewn on the right side. I seem to get an uneven opening when I take out the seam basting. Perhaps the zipper foot is pulling the fabric down over the teeth? Anyways, I do appreciate the suggestion and will try sewing on the wrong side. I agree about doing both sides in the same direction - good advice for most sewing!

I make it a rule of thumb if anything is less than about 6 inches wide I sew both sides in the same direction. Otherwise they tend to pull in opposite directions and give me lumps, bumps and wrinkles. Dorothy |

I always sew up the zipper. It is just he way my home ec teachers/professors always had us sew. I never questioned it because they were really into directional sewing in some places....that you sew in the direction of the grain, not the bias to keep the fabric from stretching.

I am SO GLAD I found this site. I'm getting ready to sew in a zipper tonight on my daughters pants. DD actually picked out a dress that she likes and wants me to make. This is a big deal considering that she has always been such a tomboy. I'll be able to do the zipper right on that too! Thanks! Carolyn
