Good Morning. I need to make a simple swag for the top of wooden indoor shutters in a bedroom...The slats for the shutters are not as wide as the plantation shutters but are the smaller ones. I want to use sheer material...just to dress it up a little without over-powering the window with material...Do any of you know of a pattern (or simple measurements )to achieve the look that I want...Or is there a place on the web to find out this info..And how far down the window should the swag come to...I'm thinking no further than than the middle of the window for sur...TIA Paula |

Usually swags go about 1/3 of the way down. But with shutters you may want them to meet the top of them.

Swags can be as long on the sides as you want them to be. I have seen beautiful ones that were floor length and practically every length from that up to about 1/3. Mostly the longer ones were the most graceful and attractive looking. In the case of a swag above shutters, I think that one that came to the sill of the window would be attractive. MariLynntx

Are you talking about just a valance, or, are you talkling about swags with jabots at the side? You usually want to try to avoid having any treatment just half the length. As someone else advised, use a third measurment for length. If you make them one half the way down, the eye tends to divide and it is not as pleasing. Your swag in the middle should not hang down very long. Swags have complicated geometry behind them. If you have a swag that is gathered onto a rod, you will find that it will hang higher or lower, depending on the length of rod that it is gathered on. The shorter the rod , the lower the swag will hang. Generally, if you are using a swag in the middle and a pair of jabots on each side, the swag will not hang into the window very much. The jabots on each side can be as long or as short as you want them to be. There are any number of patterns to be had in the pattern catalogs that will give you a pattern for what you are looking for. |

I have made all kinds, all lengths, all widths, all types and degrees of drapery in the center: single, double, multiple. I did custom sewing for years. I agree that the jabots should never be only halfway down the length of the window. It is not one of the degrees of angle that please the eye. MariLynntx

Paula I'm making sheer swags right now.. But I'm making them to the bottom of the molding on the sill.. I measured the 2 lengths of the window + the width of the window... I used the full width of the fabric hemmed both unfinished ends then looped it around the ends of a decorative rod and unfolded it so that the swag made a semi circle to about 15" in the center.. This also brings up the Jabot part of the swagso that it's at an angle when hung, Jabot by the way are the side pieces in traditional swags and jabots but since this is a 1 piece window treatment they just call it a swag... Is this the kind your talking about??? they are very easy as you only have to sew the ends and leave the salvage on the sides with sheers.. Hope this helped.. MM Marilyn

This sounds like what I want to do..eventually....I wimped out and just bought Lowe's ready made wooden blinds..(the plantation shutters would be made to order and pretty pricey for an upstairs guest bedroom...But think that a sheer swag should soften the look a little...Thanks for taking the time to answer..Paula |
