Hi everyone

I have a machine I'd like to sell but need help finding out what year it is etc etc.

I know this much...it's a Sears Kenmore Sewing Machine Model 29. It has its instruction book and another helpful leaflet and looks as if it is from the 1950's. It also looks brand new!! Seriously! I just need help dating this dinosaur so I can give accurate info and to figure out what it would be worth. Any help would be sooo appreciated!!

Thank you :dave:

Did you try calling Sears or possibly one of the Sears service centers for the info? There is also a site on line that tells dates of manufacturing of different machines..you might want to try a search engine. I know Singer has a site but it seams I also saw a site at one time that also dates other brands of machines. Good luck in your search.

Look at your instruction book.. The copyright date will give you a starting point for the age.. The machine cannot be older than the date of the instruction book that belongs to it..

I guess I should have mentioned this in my first post but on the manual there is no copyright date, seriously...unless it's that S 0595 74 bit on the back :whacky:

And looking for a way to date vintage machines other than Singer is a real pain in the patootie...I'm not getting very far with that search either

Oh well...but thanks for the help everyone!

Does the machine do anything besides a straight stitch?? That info would be very helpful in dating it..

Nope, it appears to only do a straight stitch. Sorry it took me so long to reply :bluesad: ...crazy weekend! :bg:

I had the same problem with an old treadle machine. I tried calling the original manufacturer, only to find out that it was no longer in existence. However, the original maker had been taken over by another company. So I got on the Internet and found the greatest site ISMC.com, which stands for the International Sewing Machine Collector's Society. I was able to date my sewing machine as a 1909 New Home sewing machine. It belonged to my great-grandmother. Unfortunately, my alcholohic uncle has possession of it for some years, and he sold the shuttle housing mechanism in order to buy booze. I haven't had any luck finding parts to make it completely functional thus far. If any one comes across any New Home treadle machines, circa 1909, I'd appreciate a shout.

I have a Kenmore manufactured in early 70's.. It has 5 zigzag stitches and 5 stretch stitches.. I think I bought it in about 1976.. So, yours is probably a mid 50's or early 60's model.. I know that a few machines with zigzag stitch were available in late 50's.. 57 on , for sure.. (but, very few, that early)

Kjun Redwater...that's too bad..every family has "one of those" uncles...if not alcoholic at least selfish

Well that makes sense actually Libby..if there was a way to post the manuals that go with this thing you would say "oh my gosh!" they're totally retro..very 50's...

The 29 was one of Sears early Japanese built machines. The SM Blue Book (wholesale prices) values it at $8.50.
