There is already a thread started saying "I am ready to scream" so I began this one. There is a stray cat hanging around our house. I can't get very close to it but all it does is howl. Very loud howling. Constant, very loud howling. There is bush behind our house and most of the neighbors on our side of the street. It circles and wanders thru the bush and howls constantly. It woke us up this morning. You can hear it with all the doors and windows shut. It is not hungry, I have already fed it.

I am about ready to scream too. I think it is in "season" but not sure. Aaaarrrggghhh!

I would dearly love to know why it feels the need to circle our house.

Mary,

Is it possible that your cat is in season? I have known male cats to come from very far away to get at a female in season, and they are very persistant and don't give up until they get what the want or the female goes out of season.

Do you have an Animal control you can call? We had a neighbor that had 40 cats running wild all over the neighbor. Some body called animal control and they came and got the cats. They were so bad that people couldn't even let their kids out.

Mary,
Try sprinkling ammonia around your bushes or where ever this cat likes to hang out. It won't hurt the cat but it might deter the cat from hanging around.

Moth balls might work too...I understand animals don't like the smell of moth balls....or you might get some repelent at your local store. (they sell it here in groccery, Wal Mart, pet stores)

Mary,
the constant howling sounds like that cat is in 'season' as you so delicately put it.. I have forgotten how long that usually lasts.. (my one and only cat left me 8 or 10 years ago.)

Mary,

Sounds like the cat is probably part Siamese. My daughter had a black cat that was half Siamese....she slept all day and roamed the hall YOWELLING all night. Needless to say, after that was over, she went to the vet and got fixed!. There is something about a Siamese crying when they are in season. Really gets to the last nerve. But above all, quit feeding it....even one time and they will stay forever!

If you want a cat to stay, you feed it. If you want it to go away you squirt it with the garden hose!

Good luck getting rid of the cat Mary. Last year we had trouble with several neighbors cats roaming the yard. They ended up tearing up the pool cage screen climbing it going after lizzards. Animal control would do nothing nor the neighbors. This was very expensive to have redone. We had tried everything we could think of to no avail. Finally someone told us to spread used coffee grounds where we didn't want the cats to be. It worked, really. I sure had ny doubts about it though. Now we save the grounds & keep spreading it around..Doesn't hurt plants either.

This is my pet peeve..........I like cats, I don't have one but I like them but..................beings I don't have one, I don't see why I should have to go out and hose down my patio before the grandkids go out to play because a cat has sprayed all over their toys. Why I should have to make sure the lid is ALWAYS on the sand box, and why I should have to wash cat spray off my patio doors. One day it was raining and I left my umbrella laying just outside the front door to dry, then forgot to bring it in. The next day I went out to get the paper, grabbed the umbrella on the way in and whoaaaaaaaaa. Had to throw the umbrella in the trash and rush into wash my hands with lots of soap and water. Then I could still smell it on and off all day.

So cats should be like dogs..............kept in their yards doing their thing so that the people who OWN them have the responsiblity for cleaning up after them. (as well as listening to them howling all night, season or not!).

Ok, if you are a cat lover and think they should run wild...........that is fine, don't need to hear about how wrong I am................just come clean up the mess and we will all be happy!

Norma, I agree with you 100 percent. I love cats too & don't have one. When one of my dd was young she got a bad desease from playing in our yard from neighbors cats being in our yard. Cost us a small fortune plus her pain. Then there was the pool screen cage. They use my flower bed for their bathroom unless I keep the coffee grounds in there. There are leash laws & etc for cats here, same as dogs but they aren't enforced. Not much on the dogs either. We also have problems with some. The neighbor has 2 large dogs & of course they were using our yard for their bathroom. I got tired of it as owners said it was nature so ok. Well, now they get it scooped up & put in their yard. Nope, I'm not a mean nasty person, just tired of other people's animals in my yard. Animal control is no help at all. If you have an animal, take care of it & respect your neighbors.I would never hurt an animal & don't blame them but do their owners.

i have both, cats (2) and a dog, my dog(s) have never been barkers, trained them not too and my cats are on leashes with me when they are outside, because of that i have NO tolerance for people who do not clean up after their animals or control them, the funny part is that sometimes i get "well what do you do with your animals?" they get told excatly what to do :nah: i do agree that many times the animals get the bad rap, but they are only doing what is allowed, heck all the kids would be running wild too if the parents did not set rules too, the animals are the same, they are only doing what is allowed and taught.

Cats are a lot harder to control than dogs and most places don't even try to legislate cat regulations because they would be impossible to enforce. Cats are a lot like death and taxes -- there isn't much you can do about them.

My one and only cat is an inside kitty. My dog is either inside the house or in her pen outside. I would feel really bad if either one of my animals was doing something bad to a neighbor's yard.

Again it goes back to the pets owner..........I think you can do something about cats..........you don't just turn them loose to do their thing all over the place. We are supposed to live in civilization not out in the wild and I for one don't think cat poop and spray all over is very civilized. They are not WILD animals for the most part they are PETS so someone has responsiblity for them..............they just need to get off their duff and take care of it.

As for a cat in season out and about..............that just leads to more kittens that are for the most part not wanted and not healthy................that is just plain lack of responsiblity for the animal.

Somewhere in this world the humans need to take care of the messes they create.

we have a cat by-law and they have to be liscenced just like dogs, they even let you borrow cages to trap the bad ones and take them in that way.

There are a lot of 'feral' cats around here. They don't really belong to anyone.

here in FL we have a law where you can shoot a cat if it's in your yard...
Luckily there are few cats that wander this neighborhood, because I know for a fact there are a few guns around (NOT in MY HOUSE...). I wouldn't/couldn't harm an animal...but I can certainly call, look up the owners and give THEM a piece of my mind....and I DO do that....

You can't shoot or even harm a cat or any animal here in our county in Florida. Not that we ever would either but they throw the book at you here. Animal control is useless here.

In this little village we worry more about raccoons and skunks (the worse) than cats and dogs. Uncontrolled dogs are a drag but we don't have too many cat problems. Last year a skunk moved into my basement and I'd trade it for a cat any day.

Well, our stray is gone. It was really in distress over something.

We have many tenants and we tell them this. You must be responsible for your pets. It is not the pets we are against, it's the owners who let them run loose using everything for a bathroom, dig site or scratching post. Whatever damage they do to the property is directly taken from their damage deposit.

Hi, Deb here.

I have four cats. I've done some research about howling. Yes, they do when another cat is in season but mostly they howl to show "ownership" of a territory or to avoid a fight. Believe it or not, the cat smells your cat even though it's fixed and evidently feels it is stepping on it's territory. (it doesn't know it's yours; it thinks it's his!)

One of the posts mentioned the animal control. Usually, they have live traps you can rent(20.00) to place out to catch the cat. You get the rental fee back when you return the trap and the cat. The trouble with this is - you catch everything under the sun! Possums, raccoons - you name it - anything that can get in there.

I think you need to convince the cat that it's NOT his territory; it's yours. Cats hate water. And, water can't hurt them; but it sure can convince them to leave. Spray it with the hose. Or, keep a water gun handy. Everytime the cat shows up; let him have it. He'll get the picture - or he'll be the cleanest cat in the neighborhood. : :bg:

I love my cats; one is having thyroid surgery today. Booey Bear. I'm nervous and worried; can't wait till I get the call he's ok. All four I've rescued, three are siblings and 12 years old. Little Bit is the newest. We found him two years ago at the animal control scheduled for "the big sleep" the next day. He turned out to be a Rag Doll and the sweetest cat.

Anyway, hope you get a good nights sleep soon!

Catch you later - Deb S.

Just after Christmas last year, my DH noticed a stray cat in the area that we had not seen before. He was limping badly on his left hind leg and was looking a little thin and scruffy. We couldn't get anywhere near him, so we watched, figuring if he belonged to someone, they would get him the needed attention for his leg. After 2 weeks of watching this poor guy limp about and leaving food out for him, we borrowed a trap from the Humaine Society. They would take him to a vet for a checkup and to be fixed and if he was calm enough, they would find him a home. Luckily, we caught HIM and not all the other cats in the neighbourhood. LOL Two days later, we got a call from the Humaine Society. Nothing wrong with the cat's leg (so the vet said), he was now fixed and tattooed and Oh by the way, he is too feral to find a home for, so we are just going to release him right where he was captured! They brought him up, opened the trap in my driveway and ZOOM he was gone.
No sign of him for 2 months, then we caught little glimpses of him. NOW he is the most affectionate cat I have, acting like he was always here and owns the place, and has decided he wants to be an Indoor cat like our other two cats. ! He hates to go outside. He still limps, he has two broken toes that have healed badly, all twisted and missing the claw from one toe.(and the vet said nothing was wrong...what a quack!) Hubby has named him "Skippy"
When my son and his fiance get their own place, they are taking him with them.
Barb
Don't worry about the world coming to an end today. It's already tomorrow in Australia.

I can relate to the cat! I have a broken toe on my right foot (second one to the right of my big toe) and yet the doc says there is nothing wrong with my foot. He did x-rays and said that I had had 3 small bones broken behind my toes but those breaks had healed nicely and he didn't see anything wrong. However, I'm in constant pain, can hardly walk without pain, definitely cannot wear enclosed shoes and the top of my foot and toes are swollen almost all the time. Hey, maybe my med doc is actually a vet? :whacky:

Hey, maybe my med doc is actually a vet?

I think one of my docs was a vet in disguise.

At seven years old, my daughter fell almost 20 feet down a flight of stairs. She missed the pavement at the bottom by hitting the tire of a bicycle someone had left out of place (Thank Heaven!). My DH rushed her to the emergency room where they took a full set of X-rays and assured him she hadn't broken anything. They gave her a few small stitches and sent her home.

Years later, we were putting her school photos into a scrapbook when DH started comparing. Between her second grade photos (just before it happened) and her later ones, we can plainly see her nose was broken.

Now, we have to wait until she's finished growing to get it fixed. And, it's "cosmetic" so we'll have to pay for it ourselves. If they had caught it then, I could've made the apartment owner pay it because he had taken down the section of handrail that allowed her to fall in the first place....

From now on, everytime I have to see a doctor, I remind myself that 50% of all doctors graduated in the lower half of their class...and if it's serious -or could be- to get a second opinion!

I'm getting in on this late but just for future reference, DO NOT SPRINKLE AMONIA around. It will not deter the cat and may even reinforce its coming to your yard. Amonia smells like cat urine and it is what you use to train a cat to use it's litter box. Don't use it to clean up any pet "mistakes", dog or cat, either, for the same reason. Try special pet products or vinegar for cleaning.

Our three cats are all somebody else's reject. DH is just getting ready to visit Sadie at the Vet's. She's been lethargic since Wednesday (now Tues.) and at the Vet's on IV since Friday. They're going to do an untrasound today to see if something is blocking off her bile ducts, there is some other obstruction, like cancer and just generally try to find the reason for her poor feeling. Her temperature has been as high as 40.8 (38 to 39 is normal). We are worried sick and the other two cats and our dog are looking for her.
