I've been hand-sewing small plush dolls for a while and finally decided that I should get a machine for better quality and faster completion time. The only problem is that my funds are quite low and I really do not want to spend 200+ for a machine that I will be using for very small projects (7" plush dolls to be exact). I tried using one of those mini/portable machines but it ended up eating most of my fabrics than sewing any pieces of fabric together.

Any suggestions or opinions are greatly appreciated. Many thanks in advance!

You mentioned you used a mini portable machine that you were not happy with. I have used a small machine that I am very happy with. I make dolls etc. and I have a Jem Silver that I recently gave to my daughter. The Jem Silver like the Janome Jem Gold is a small machine that functions like a bigger machine. It has a rotary hook and several different stitches and also makes a nice buttonhole. You can purchase a Jem Silver on line for $199. The original price I believe was around $399. This machine was made for quilters to take to class etc. and it handles heavy materials quite well.

For what you are doing one of these little machines would be perfect!
kenmoremini (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=41250&item=8194694978&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW)

These are small but the reviews from owners are great! I have no affiliation with this seller [or Sears!], just the first one that I found on Ebay. Be sure to find one that is tested or new and has all the accessories...especially the foot pedal!

I believe they are made by Janome for Sears.

You can buy it from the Sears website too, [they come in other colors there]they are under $100.

Yes, those Kenmore little mini's are nice too. My oldest daughter who is an RN has one and makes her and her daughters nursing scrubs on it for work. It is also a Janome like the Janome Jem Silver and Jem Gold. The main difference it that the Gold and Silver have a slant spool and a rotary hook and cost more and have the quality of the large janome machines. But the little Janome Kenmore mini that also comes in several colors now is a nice machine for the money. The little Jem Silver has the ASG emblem on it and the little blue carry case that comes with it. Janome created the Jem Silver with the emblem to celebrate the American Sewing Guilds 25th anniversary. The Jem Gold was created for quilters to take to class.
