This is all new to me....so here are my questions Is a walking foot really needed to machine quilt? What is it's purpose? How about the darning foot?? What will this one do? I'm trying to decide if I really need a walking foot or not......help! mgf~ Blessings & Smiles

I would say yes both are necessary. The walking foot is for when you want to 'straight' stitch. The walking foot has like feed dogs under and along with the sewing machine feed dogs it helps to prevent puckers as you sew the three layers together........backing/batting/and top. The darning foot sometimes called the free motion foot is where you DROP the feed dogs and you create the sewing your want by moving the fabric underneath the foot. You can draw squiggles, circles, and follow marked patterns on your quilt. If this didn't answer you well enough, holler, Susie northern NY

That is just what I was thinking~I will have to order a walking foot for my machine. It came with the darning foot. That will come in handy when I'm finishing my first quilt. Thanks for your help Susie! mgf~ Blessings & Smiles

When I first started quilting I needed a walking foot too. I got a 'generic' one at my local quilt shop for a very good price. Hope you have fun with it and you are very welcome, Susie northern NY
