Hi:

I'm working on a Butterick skirt pattern with an elasticized waist. The instructions regarding the waist elastic casing says to "stitch invisibly along the foldline". I couldn't find any information regarding what they mean, and I don't really see how an invisible stitch along the waist foldline would be of any benefit. Could someone take a moment to explain this ? Many Thanks :)

Sometimes, especially on a curve, it is easier to press along a fold line if there is a line of stitching. Could that be the point?

Yes, I was thinking that too. It was the term "invisibly stitch" that threw me off. I hate it when pattern companies say things like that without giving definitions :(

Well I just looked up invisible stitching in my Vogue Butterick Step by Step Guide to Sewing Techniques book and guess what I found -- nothing.
Then I scanned the casing section and didn't find anything so I guess you are going to have to improvise.
Unless Pam can figure it out. (She's smart, you know)

Thank you, I don't know if I can live up to your compliment, but I do know that sometimes they have you lightly slip stitch interfacings or sometimes elastic at the inside top portion of the waistband to keep it from rolling down. Several of these methods haven't been used so much lately because we use so much fusible "stuff" but in the case of elastic, I can see where it might help. You would just lightly stitch at the top edge on the inside of the waistband on the portion that would be closest to the body so that if any stitches show, they won't be noticed.

The other thing is that if this is applied before the elastic, they might want you to slip stitch (as opposed to top stitching) the fold line together, front to back to keep the top crease of the waistband sharp. when you top stitch and then add elastic it looks "funny". If you add elastic without that, the casing is rather round. If that is the case, just do a slip stitch very near the fold on the inside...I'd just do a bit of a running stitch...not terribly tiny as it is just to hold the crease and won't have a lot of pressure on it.

Hi Patsy:

It's Butterick 3654, skirt w. elastic waist. On page 2, after front & back sections of the skirt are sewn together, it says:

"with wrong sides together, pin lining to skirt, having raw edges even. Baste close to upper raw edge. Sew Invisibly along foldline"

I couldn't figure it out, and the picture they supplied wasn't very explicit, so I just sewed normally along the marked foldline, and it seemed to turn out okay, but I'm just wondering what I was missing. I've made many other elasticized waist skirts and they never called for this "invisible" business on the waistline ! Sorry I'm so clueless on this !
