OK, i feel stupid. There was a thread on how to do a rolled hem w/o a rolled hem foot or serger. Does anyone know the thread or technique? It seemed to involve sewing along the raw edge and turning under along the thread line.

Thank you Mary, but I think there was another thread that had a different technique? ... It had something to do with sewing close to the raw edge and then folding ON the seam line... I forget the other details. The closest technique in the thread you mentioned is just a simple double-fold 1/4" hem which isn't as narrow as I'd like.

Argh... am I just crazy and remembering something that wasn't there? ;-)

from about.com on rolled hems in a machine:

"Tip: To hold the hem taut while sewing, use a third hand or anchor the hem in front of you with a heavy weight."

Hahaha... If I had a third hand, my life would be a lot easier, esp. caring for two babies!

Maybe you are thinking about the one in the May issue of Threads.

Press a 1/4" hem on all edges. Stitch 1/8" from fold, starting and stopping 1/4" from corners. Trim the hem allowances close to stitching and straight off the edges at unstitched corners. Fold in each unstitched corner to form a small tiny triangle and use glue stick to tack.

Press each edge in 1/8" to form mitered corners. Stitch along the fold, pivoting at corners. Press to flatten.

Hope this helps.

Blackie, the "third hand" mentioned is a sewing help gadget that clamps on the edge and has a good spring clip to hold fabric taut. It is very handy when I am removing some stitching when I goof up.......yeh, I do that once in a while. It is also handy for other things, have used one for several years. I don't think it would help with the kids. Betty

Sewing Bird is a similar tool.. It clamps the fabric in its beak... Great gadgets..
