Earlier today my internet went out and it kept coming back and forth well I narrowed it down to when I open the cd door on the front of my computer it comes back on, when the door closed it goes off. Any thoughts to what that might be all about anyone? It's been working fine since I have the open door but I don't want to leave it open all the time. Has anyone had a problem like this?

Ouch!

That sounds like a short somewhere. Can you open the computer case & look for any signs of crossed, burnt wires? Do you smell any smoke from anywhere?

Another possibility is that the computer got a hard bump recently. The CD rack may be loose, and when the tray is inside the weight is causing it to slide down & exert pressure on your modem. And, if left untreated it could cause a short.

The best thing to do is open the case and have a good, long look inside with the door both open and closed. The worst case scenario is that something -probably the CD-ROM, but possibly the whole computer will need replaced. But it might be that something just needs tightened or re-placed in it's rack.

It is possible you may have picked up a trojan that has taken control of your computer. Do a full scan with your anti-virus protection. It would be a good idea to do a spy check with this free download called spybot.... here is the link if you are interested http://www.download.com/3000-2144-10122137.html?part=104443&subj=dlpage&tag=button

This is also an excellent trojan remover.... http://paretologic.com/xoftspy/lp/14/ The only thing with xoftspy is [but I could be wrong] when you download it you may have to buy the product to remove the trojan if one is found. But at least you will know one way or the other. Xoftspy would be my choice.
Just my thoughts.
Good luck and I hope you are able to solve the mystery.

Thanks to all who replyed. It is working fine now with the door shut. It maybe that is was not the cd door at all it might be just luck that it happened to start working when I opened the door. No telling what it is cox says it's not the service.

DragonLady, the modem is not internal, it's a stand alone modem for braudband, fast internet that sits on top my desk. But I know what you are saying about something loose........ it could be. I know it hasn't been hit or anything I have it under my desk and no one comes in here but me. We just replaced my Cd burner about 3 months ago so something could be loose.

Saydee, I have all the spyware, firewall, and virus scan protection with cox that could have been a problem also it slowed my puter down a lot. I took it off when I was trying things to see if that's what is was, but it still did it with the scans off my puter. Thanks for the advice though.
