Joanne,

I was out of town and just checked this morning to see the blocks are up. Thanks, I like these. Especially, July's. Can we make more than one July block if we like doing a lot of different things during the summer months or should I try to incorporate them into one block?

Can I use a picture of me stretched out on my swing on my patio in my "jammies" for my July Block? LOL :bg:

Thanks, Joanne. That fabric was in a box of fabric pieces(mostly cotton) I bought some time ago, when I decided that I might want to learn about quilting. That was a good way for me to go, since I experience anxiety in the quilting section of the fabric store...no idea what to choose. All of the different pieces in the box provide lots of opportunity for experimenting and learning. What fun! Now I always check the remnant bin for cottons, to add to the 'repertoire'.
Take care,
Donna

Donna I really do like your block! Super job on it too girl!
I have lots of ideas running in and out of my head but I am thinking I want to re-think this because of what Donna did with her July Block. I love Joanne's June block too~~~~~~~~~~ WOW. You ladies are so creative! I am researching my embroidery library to see if I can come up with something~
Hope we all get some sewing done this weekend.

Thanks, everyone. :bluesmile

I will be gone most of July, so I want to get my blocks done before I go. I still have to figure out what to do with my June Sunbonnet block.

The idea for July came quickly...because I am a 'Canuck' :Canada: and I've been wanting to do something with a maple leaf for some time. I finally got an opportunity to do that, although I have to admit that getting that maple leaf to fit the centre block was a real brain-stretcher :whacky:

Joanne, What did you use for buttons on your Barry? I just now discovered my boy does not have any buttons on his suspenders. LOL! Maybe mine is chubbier than yours and doesn;t need any help holding up his pants~~~~~~~ LOL~~~~~~~~~~~~ Got to get busy now on my June/July Houses~ Whew Sure glad to get sunbonnet and July Block out of the way! I get messed up with using Steam a Seam. I always seem to draw on the wrong side the first time and have to go back and re-do~~~~~~ Oh it is all in fun I guess. I still enjoy the challenges you give us. If we are staying the stay with our knowledge then we aren't growing like we need to be, right? This little man was harder to me, than those triangles. I vote for something really really really easy in August~ LOL!!!!!!!!! have a wonderful day. Back to work I go~ OKNANA

Looks like I am going to slide in at the end of the month again Joanne, got a whole load of teaching to prepare for this weekend first. I am going to the Eden Project in Cornwall in July - a whole load of geodesic domes with different climates inside - this has given me some wacky ideas for July but I don't reckon I am too good at sewing circles - my brunkards path block on the sampler you did before is Very Drunk. Any hints on how to sew curves smoothly? Imagine a block with a load of circles on top of each other (in all my luvverly checks) some showing completely others half hidden - would it be best to layer these up or go the applique route?

Jan, sewing circles and odd shapes is like any other sewing. You have to ease in the circle. They key is to have the needle down, lift the presser foot, rotate, presser foot down and sew. You can keep doing this but also it does turn very easy if you take your time.

I like everyone's blocks that have been completed. I probably won't get to mine until sometime in July. I have out of town company and next week will be gone sailing. But, I will be thinking about what I want to do.

Jo's July Block - Is this all embroidery by machine? I like it.

I have sent you my Sunbonnet Barry, to go with Sunbonnet Sharon (also in fake Burberry) All they need now is a souped up Nova with blue lights..(English Joke)

actually to me he looks more like a stunted child Marsh Wiggle - must be the hat.

The blocks are great! Carolyn, that is great fabric..............you must have a great stash!

Magot...........so glad to see poor Barry or whoever without his garden.............no embrodiery machine at my house.......sigh. Mine will be contemplating the universe or something. (the lint in his belly button maybe??).

So guess I need to get busy here...........been off in the cool mountains of Colorado.......back to the heat and the sewing machine.

Jo, did you go see that baby??? Give him lots of hugs and kisses?? I sure hope so................

are you two sure that"my photo"s isn't just a generic term and that Yahoo is picking up cookies from your computers and assuming you each want to see your own photos? use the jo1953 link - my Barry does look at bit lonely - I've just been rereading "little house on the prarie" perhaps he is in a dust storm?

Thanks everyone for your lovely comments about Sam. I used the left over background from Sue's block to do Sam's. These will be the only blocks that kind of match.

Carolyn, love the background fabric. Donna, the overalls with pockets and patches are great.

Everyone's doing a fine job with their blocks. Such creativity...it's so exciting to see what everyone thought up and did!

Hi Everybody,
I had the same idea as Judy(to match the backgrounds for the boy & girl blocks). I think I will have to add some more applique embellishment to the girl block, so she doesn't get outdone by the boy! :bluewink:

I've used many different fabrics in my blocks, and I have tried to repeat as much as possible. I wonder how it will look when I bring the blocks all together, and I've been trying to think of a way to unify them. I had a little brainwave to use scraps from all of those fabrics to make a border of some sort, but I don't know how it will look.

I'm not good at envisioning things like that, but I guess I should really ask Joanne first...Joanne, will we be making a border for our quilts??

I really enjoy looking at all the blocks, too!
Take care,
Donna

Thanks Jo,
I used these wax crayons to draw the picture, then a wet paintbrush to paint over the crayons and thread to give it some texture. Now I need to learn how to draw better, looks like my 5 year old granddaughter drew it. Hey I could tell everyone she did, lol.

I tried paper piecing for this block. It is part of a quilt titled Firecracker, so this is my firecracker for the 4th of July. lol.

I was going to ask the name of the block, Summer and then read your post that it was paper pieced..........it is outstanding! I love some of the paper pieced blocks but have never tried it and this makes me want to. Love the fabric also.

Summer, your block is just gorgeous~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Way to go Summer~~~~~~~~~~~ You did a super job on it. Love those colors girl~
I have looked and looked at this fabric before and never was inspired to make anything with it and you have inspired me to buy some now~~~~~ Did you get the pattern off the internet? I have done very little paperpiecing. Too much work to take the paper off afterwards to me. I like to see results fast, I guess~ LOL
Keep up the great work girl~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Way to go~~~~~~~~

Thank you. Yes I got the pattern on the McCalls Quilting site. It has a lot of different patterns on it, I was surprised. One thing I found out when I did this was, I used the paper that you would used in your printer. It is quite heavy and I couldn't see the lines on the back. I tried one block with the paper I use to trace patterns and it was easier to see what/where I was suppose to laying the fabric. It was much easier to rip that paper out too.
Once again thank you for all the kind words.

Summer,

I love it! It does remind me of fireworks exploding in the night sky. I also like your Barry Block. Now I want to try paper piecing. I have a free pattern for a sailboat. So many things I want to try and so little time. :bluewink:

Hand surgery X2 is over with and my blocks are on the way to Joanne.
Love seeing what's been done so far. Talented, every one of you!

SailorLiz: I found a free paper piecing pattern for a sailboat on the internet too, and used it for my July block. I hope it's not the same one you have your eye on! I love to holiday at a lake, so a sailboat seemed like a natural choice, and I've been wanting to try my hand at paper piecing. (No copying of your idea was intended - honest.) I hope you do one, too. It'll be fun to see one with different colors. Mine has a beige sail as I had no white.

Loved the firecracker block - thought it was a blazing sun - but loved it! Also loved the roadmap and liscense plate block...now on a search for some similar fabric. I will need three more lifetimes to incorporate all these neat ideas!

Missed you all. It's nice to be sewing and keyboarding again.

Bev,

I love your sailboat block. No problem about doing that. I think mine might be the same pattern. It was a long time ago that I found it on the internet. Actually, I was thinking of something different for my July block. It still might incorporate sailing, since that is my most favorite summer time activity.
Good job on your Barry block and glad your are all healed and back to sewing. I bet you missed it.

Jo,

Unless there is another Liz doing the Advent lesson's blocks, the sailboat isn't mine, it is Bev's. She did a great job! I can understand why you thought it was mine though. I'm working on my Barry block tonight. It is so hot here and my sewing room is upstairs, I can only work in that heat for a little while. Now I understand the meaning of "sweatshops". Take care!

Glad you liked my blocks! After it was all done I realized I could have cut out Barry's straw hat on the bias so it would look better; live and learn! If anyone is wondering what he and his puppy are looking at, it's his kite...he'd rather fly kites than garden! I'm hoping to somehow incorporate this block with the one we did of the window earlier this spring. (Out my window, I saw kites.) Maybe the window block can go at the top of the quilt and Barry can go near the bottom with a string winding its way between them. Hmmmm.

Joanne, sorry to hear about your upcoming surgery. I hope you will be surrounded by people who will fuss over you and piles of quilt magazines to read while you recover. I'll bet you'll soon be dreaming about next year's teaching project...I know I am! Take care.

M & M,
Glad to have you back with us and you are doing so well with your hand~ Happy to hear that~Loved your sailboat~ May I ask where on the net did you get yourpattern> What site? PP still scares me~ I don't know why but it does. I am intimidated by it. There are those that love it and won't hardly do anything else but I shy away from it. Maybe someday I will give it another whirl.
Take care, OKNANA

Bev - I had spotted your 2 blocks went together, I like to try and work out how the whole quilt will work out. The paper piercings that people have done are very crisp - you get some impressive results with this. The only paper piercing I ever tryind was a Garndmathers flower garden which invovled an ETERNITY of little hexagons. Sort of put me off!

Finally finished my Barry blocks & July blocks-decided to do all 3 (as I'm doing 3 quilts) the exact same this time...so much easier & faster! Of course I'm behind with June but ahead with July so......... Anyway, be on the lookout for the Joann-they are on their way to you.

Am taking a paper piecing class tomorrow night, hoping that helps to sink it in, everytime I think I have it figured out I end up sewing it together wrong! And I loved Summer's firecracker block so much I want to do one but would like to do it without having to rip things out all the time so...off to class tomorrow night.

Love everyone's blocks, they are wonderful-great ideas from everyone!

Hi Oklahomanana,
Here is the site for the block you asked about:

http://www.wendyvosters.com/freepattern.htm

Scroll down the page to the Sailboat Quilt and click on it. It opens a two page document; print the second page. You'll notice I did my ocean "straight" instead of slanted. Have fun!

Hi Magot,
I hear you. I got all enthusiastic about Grandmother's Flower Garden too. I hand sewed just enough hexagons together for a pot-holder and thought, "Well! That's enough of THAT!" (Don't want to use the pot-holder either - too much work went into it to get it soiled. Sheesh. Maybe I'll use it for a pin cushion.)

Here's a link to a much simpler paper pieced sailboat:

http://www.quiltaholics.com/pp/sailboat.htm

(I found out the way to teach yourself paper piecing is to practice, practice, practice.) By the way, while my hands were bandaged I surfed the net for ideas - there are over 1600 FREE paper piecing patterns (you only need one working finger to click the mouse, hee, hee), and found lots of sailboat patterns. I'll post the main link when I find it again - just in case you get hooked!

Well, Joanne, you can ask but I can't tell you. Went looking but I had cut off all the selvages and they are gone in the trash-I even went through the trash to see if they were there but I think they went out to the dumpster a few days ago. I need to go back to the store I bought it from this weekend though so I'll see if I can find it and let you know! It is really cute, isn't it?

Norma, Once again, I was getting to retire for the night and had to sign on just one more time to ck emails, swaps, and you are the last one on this one for the evening for me, and I had to giggle again! I agree with you though. No- No is for me on a Grandmother's flower garden! Too much work and I like to see fast results~

I tell ya, it has been too hot in my sewing room to sew any the past 2 weeks and I am having withdraws I think~ LOL~ It is inventory time at work too and once I get home, all I want to do is cook dinner, sit with DH and watch some tv and then get online. I have got to get back in there though, bc I have some blocks that I need to catch up on~

What are you working on right now?

Well I am yawning away and work comes early so I best sign off and get some shut eye. Thanks for the smiles once again! Keep 'em coming~

Yes, my husband hunts also. He really liked it. I was going to hang a sign somewhere on the block saying Gary's Deer Camp! :nah:

Teacher, thanks for the compliment. I had some scrap denim and cotton duck (green) scraps. Thought I would try those on the block to see how it would look. I don't think those are traditional materials to be using though for a quilt block? I really like the applique technique. I have a hard time stopping. :re:

Thanks Jo. Yes, it's appliqué. The tower is basically two pieces and I've tried free motion embroidery to make the detail with the exception of the clock. That I used a pigma pen to add the detail and the time...10:05 when the fireworks usually start. Appliqued on the flag and sewed the pole and stitched some stars. I've had a fat quarter of this firework fabric for a couple of years now and knew I wanted to do something with the Parliament buildings. The July block gave me the perfect opportunity to do it.

Joanne-finally made it back to the fabric store I purchased this fabric from. Hope this is the info you need. It is called "goin fishing" Designs by possibilities is what's on the end of the bolt & the selvage.

By the way, I think you owe $45 now....I couldn't just go in there and not buy anything you know........LOL just kidding. :bg:

Ok, came home and looked at the fabric.......only info I can find is what it is called. Written on the selvage is: something to crow about 2004.
No info on mfg. Next time I'm in the fabric stores I'll look and see if I can find it...can't remember which store I bought it in-either Joann's or Craftmart.

All the blocks are so cute. I have my spools and Barry done but no camera yet. Son said he would bring his digital when he comes for a visit but don't know when that might be. I can't seem to come up with an idea for July but maybe the light bulb will come on before December. Guess I could do something like...sitting at the sewing machine with the fan turned my way and a glass of ice water close by. hahaha

Have a good day.

Hey have you seen in the stores now that you can buy a "one time use" digital camera!?!?!? Once you have taken all the pictures you take it back and it is then put on to a disc for you.
I have seen them at our local CVS Drug Store. This might be something that those of you that don't have a digital camera might want to check out.
Not sure what they cost, being new on the market they might be on the high end of the price range, but you never know.
I haven't had the time to do June or July's blocks. Have been fixing everyone else's darn computer!!!!!! Plus working part-time. Hopeto get it done soon. Only have two more weeks of work at Blossom.

Dorene, your houses are coming along nicely, yes that sure will be alot of work but worth it. :bluewink:

Teresa, your June and July blocks are wonderful. That Barry sure does get to do alot of things in the summer doesn't he? lol. Your sunflower must of been alot of work. :bluesmile

Joanne, thanks for posting our houses in order~ It helps to see them all together and to start thinking about sashing color to put them all together. Good going woman. Any ideas from any of you ladies on what color that would go good with all this mixture of color?

Thanks Joanne, I think that the Sunbonnet Sue and Barry are so much fun! He does seem to be a busy guy! LOL Yes my sunflower was alot of work, but I really like doing the stained glass look. I did that one with the Victorian Style stained glass pattern, it requires no bias strips. I will be making a wall hanging using that when I have a chance. :bluesmile

Great job on your houses Dorene! I am working on catching up on mine, I have 3 to finish now. LOL I have been looking at material and I think I am going to go with a sand or pebble color material to pull it all together. I think it was Mary who suggested it saying it looks like paths. Plus being a neutral color it will go with all the colors of the houses. Well back to work, I still have 3 more blocks do!

OKNana.............you are one ahead of me on the houses!! Guess it is time to put away all these other projects and get back to that if it is going to be finished for my friend. Having a hard time coming up with an idea for Sept..............

I think for Sept. I am going looking for school fabric and make a school house. Or might just decide to do the house like the others only in school themed fabric.

I have to get further ahead too! I want to do Sept and Oct's in August and then get Nov and Dec. due in Sept, so I can get them to the quilters in first of OCt. Busy~ Busy~~~

Wow, those blocks are wonderful! I see several more have been added while I was away.
Summer, your 'fireworks' really jumps out!...a great idea for July, and the fabric was a perfect choice! Was it hard to do all of those corners? Is that block pattern available anywhere online???
Take care,

Hi Summer. sorry it has taken me so long to reply to you. I am still having computer problems. :throw: The crayons I used this time on my Barry Block are Crayola Fabric Crayons made by Dritz. I got them at Michaels. I really liked the way these turned out. I have never heard of Dick Blick, is that a store? LOL Sorry don't mean to sound dumb! :nc: LOL

Donna, it is paper pieced, which was easy and fun but ripping out all the paper can be tedious. Here is the link where I got it.http://qnm.com/articles/feature24/
Dick Blick is online and sells all kind of art supplies. The crayons I used, you color with them, then use a wet paint brush and paint over them. I forgot the name of them but they are called watercolor pastels. My YD has my set right now being creative.

On your mats there is also a 60 degree angle to guide you for your baby blocks.

Here I go again!!! Can you explain about the matt and the 60 degree angle.? Does this have something to do with putting the block onto the background block? Maybe I don't need to read these post and just do!!!!!

Rodi, the 60 degree angle on your mat can help you line up your block when cutting or even when drawing out the block.

that will be another lesson for another time!!!!!!!!!!! lol after i got my template enlarged to equal 4" and cut out in plastic, guess there is no need to learn how to do it on the cutting mat, I looked at my matt and seen how to do down the top sides, but how do yu do the bottom half?
will just use what the good teacher gave us to use.
