I was supposed to have it done this thursday, but got an e-mail from my SIL in La. that they'll be here to visit sometimes thursday. Thank goodness she emailed me. Sometimes they surprise us. :re: Anyway, I'm having it done next week now.
Anyone have an idea how long it takes to get over it? The dentist said just a few days, if no problems. My sis says more like a week. :nc: Mine are impacted. :bluesad:

You know how it is, everyone wants to make sure that mom can still run them everywhere they need to go.

I had all 4 of mine taken out at once. I was fine after 2 days, but mine weren't impacted either.

Hey Bama,

Is SIL bring you some creole tomatoes? They are on my diet and I've eaten my weight in them this week. Yummy.

I had this done about 30 years ago so I know it's changed but mine were impacted and they took all of them out at once. Two were impacted and two were out but coming out the side of the gum. They put me under with gas and I would have been recooped in a week but the impacted teeth were pushing against my other teeth under the gums and I had a lot of pain afterwards and then found out it was cracked filings not the wisdom teeth surgery that was causing the pain. After they fixed the filing I was good to go. Just make sure you keep your mouth rinsed very good afterwards when they say you can rinse especially after eating. It keeps the healing process going.

Bama, I got mine all four of my impacted wisdom teeth cut out about 3 years ago; the first couple of days were OK, since they gave me painkillers, but I have a fairly low tolerance to some kinds of pain, and I they only gave me a two day supply... so day 3 and 4 were quite unpleasant for me. I had to call and get a refill. (And believe me... I am NOT one of those people who takes pain medication randomly... I had my tubes tied 2 years ago, and only took what I HAD to have and left the rest.)

Anyway, it took me 4-5 days to get over it. I had always heard that the older you are, the more difficult the healing process on this procedure... but I didn't really have any problems.

Be careful of those dry sockets, though! You'll be fine... just try to sleep most of it off. That's what I did

Let us know how you are doing...

I had mine done many years ago, as well. My daughter had hers done about 10 yrs ago. I think it depends on whether it is the top or bottom. Top heal faster due to better circulation, while bottom, inflammation tends to pool in the jaw making for slower healing. Use lots of cool compresses on face. Both mine and my daughters pain lasted only a 2-3 days but swelling took much longer to go down. I guess it depends on what you want to do after surgery.

I had mine out at 21 (nearly 30 yrs ago). All were impacted. The lowers had wrapped roots around my jaw. I was in surgery for 3-1/2 hrs. (I came out of the anesthetic during and tried to bite the dentist... ) I had very little pain...took no pain pills. I went home cleaned the house, didn't bother to lay down or anything. I had a little bruising on my lower jaws. They'd tied all my sutures around the teeth in front of'em....I couldn't stand the feeling, so I pulled my own stitches out after 2 days. ( I don't recommend this to anyone, but -I- didn't suffer any ill effects). I had no bleeding. I went to work the next day.

My husband had his out at 24. He was a pain...wouldn't change his own gauze, took pain pills and slept for 5 days...

I must say though...I have a very high pain threshold and very little bothers me. (I had my gallbladder out in 93 and the stitches bothered me then too, so I pulled those out too...it was laprascopic, so there were only 4 and I didn't have any ill effects from that either...I drove the day after surgery, which I wasn't supposed to do...but heck...I felt fine...) :bg:

I had all of mine out the same day (impacted and twisted roots and had not pleasant getting the roots drilled out). Bled like crazy but no swelling. The dentist had me bite on a used tea bag to stop the bleeding. I was actually well enough the next day to take my girls to a skating concert. Had them out on a friday and went back to work on the monday. No big deal at all for me. Just remember not to suck thru a straw and if you smoke (I don't) now is a good time to quit. A co-worker had hers out just after me and she didn't bleed at all but she was swollen up like a chipmunk for a month. From reading the other reports, everyone recovers differently and has different after-affects.
Good luck
Violet

Thanks for all the replies.
I'm having the two on the bottom removed. One has a nerve running right under it so the dentist thought it might be causing the pain that I've been thinking was an ear ache for a while now.
My son is worried because he has another karate belt testing 3 days after my appointment. I hope I'll feel like going. I can't put it off again though. Another one of dh's brothers and family are coming to visit for a week at the end of the month. I want to be over this before they get here.
I have to run kids to gymnastics, karate, or cheer practice every 2 or 3 days. Looks like dad might get to for a few days. :bg:

Bama --
Sounds like you need to stop worrying about everyone else and take care of your own health. If anyone can't understand then they aren't worth worrying about anyway. From what everyone says it likely won't take more than a week at worst -- so the rest of the world is going to have to take care of itself for a week. You count too!!

From what I understand, impacted is when the teeth are still underneath the gums and are harder to remove. It's much easier if they are sticking out. Mine are also partly underneath the back molars. :bluesad:

Dorothy, I have decided to do just that. I'm tired of planning everything I have to do around everyone else. :bang: Let them realize just what I do around here.

Susie,
bil and sil are here and they didn't bring me a thing this time. :re: :bluewink:
I'm sure we'll have a great time though. I have a blast with this sil. The two of us usually stay up all night at least once when she visits.

I'm starting to get nervous. The office called to give me instructions for tomorrow and said I'll be getting anesthesia through an IV. They think I'll need it. I was hoping not to have to have anything other than for numbness because I had anesthesia problems last year when I had my tubes tied. They couldn't wake me up for 4 hours after surgery. They said it's not the same as I won't have the tube down my throat. Still makes me nervous. :nervous:
"See" you guys in a few days. I might be on Lortabs for a while. :whacky:

I had one and only one removed, twenty years ago. The dentist was a hyper type whose demeanor made me a little nervous, so "we" decided on a Valium an hour or so before surgery. It went very well, but mine was "supererupted" so I think it may have com out easier than average. Went back to work the next day. I had no problems at all. I imagine in twenty years, the process has been improved even more, even for those with impacted teeth. Best wishes, C

You're in my prayers Bama. I will be thinking about you. Take your time recouping and rest. The more you listen to the doctor the faster the recovery will be. The house and kids can wait. Let us know.................I know you will be fine. I was scared for my surgery on my eyes and that was the worse part of it the fear of surgery. You have a lot of us rooting for you, with that being true, you won't have any problems.

I had my impacted wisdom teeth out when I was 20 after a lot of earache and pain.

A lot of swelling and a few small bruises afterwards but I found that bags of frozen peas helped - much better than ice as I could mould the bag around my face better and there were no "spikey" bits to dig in.

Take it easy for a few days - you'll have to after the anaesthetic anyway - and let someone look after you for a change.

Best wishes Bama, Tony had his out at the dentist and they gave him a general - I had to take him home afterwards - they were expecting me to have a car - but as a penniless non driving student I took him on the bus. The one with the day release inmates from the local 'nuthouse' - he blended in with the other drugged up droolies a treat. He found he couldn't open his mouth much and had to eat mush but really the swelling and discomfort are gone after a few days. I'm tempted to say unless you are a man....
Me, I eat on my wisdom teeth - thought that was what they were for?
I understood impacted to mean that they are crowding against the side or underneath the adult teeth, thereby causing discomfort and crooked teeth. Removing them gives the other teeth room to settle and as the impaction can only get worse...better in the long run.

Everything went pretty well. It was weird though. They put in my IV and the next thing I knew someone was wrapping ice packs around my face. It was over and I didn't realize they had even started. :whacky:
Yesterday was awful. I threw up everytime I took my medicine or a sip of water.
Today is much better. I'm still sore, but it's not near as bad as yesterday. Hubby said my face is a little puffier today.
I managed to eat applesauce this morning.
