I have been sewing on a Kenmore for about 20 years. My grandmother gave me singer 384 a few days ago but it will only feed the fabric in reverse. It will not go forwards I have tried everything in the manual, but nothing works. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks :bluesmile

HI:

I had an old Singer that was similar to your 384, the reverse mechanism was stuck (the button in the center of the stitch settings). If you take it to a sewing machine repair shop they might be able to oil it up and get it back in shape. Good luck !

Does it go in reverse when it is set on a regular forward stitch? If it's an older machine, I've heard of that happening when the cord is plugged into the machine backwards.
Take care,
Donna

Thanks for the 2 replies. When the machine is in a regular (forward mode) the fabric does not move. It is just stationary. When you push the reverse lever the fabric does go in reverse.

Does the lever have a knob that screws on the end of the handle? If so try unscrewing it to release the setting. I don't know this machine but I know some older singers had the lever for reverse and regular stitching and the screw at the end of the lever is what set the setting to stay in that positon.

This is a fairly newer model with an automatic buttonholer and such. The reverse lever does not have a screw in it  . I have called Sears and Singer and apparently this model was a "special" model that they no longer make. I guess I will have to take it to a repair shop and hope it doesn't cost too awful much.

Are you sure of the model number ? The models around 384 were made in the early 1960's. I have a 328K and it's from about 1961. At any rate you should check the feed dogs. They should come up and move the fabric, then go down below the needleplate. Sometimes there's a knob to raise or lower the feed dogs for darning. But as I said before it's probably needing adjustment, or something is sticking. You can compare your machine to pictures of other models at SewUSA. They also have threading instructions for most machines.

I also thought the 384 was an older model being the Singer 300 series was from years ago. I believe from doing some research on the site posted..your Singer might be a model that was sold by Sears. The newer Sears Kenmores are made by Janome and the numbers start with 385 as Janome being the manufacturer. I own a Janome Kenmore model 19365 but the entire model number for my machine is 385.19365991. The Sears Singer models started with 384 ..with Singer being the manufacturer. You might wish to call Sears or if you have a Sears repair store there I would also call them.

What you have described sounds like the buttonholer is partially engaged, and is trying to take over control of the feeding direction.
