A friend has asked me to shorten the hem on a bridesmaid dress. I marked the hem late in the evening and didn't realize that the hem is not level all the way around. It dips into a slight train in the back. I marked the length in the front to clear her shoes. Am I safe to assume that I would take up the same amount all the way around the hem or will I be distorting the train? This seems as though it should be a very logical situation but I'm at a loss. My friend is out of town and expecting this to be completed when she returns. Anyone done something like this?

How much do you have to shorten it? Is the train supposed to touch the floor?

Mary The dress is supposed to have a floor dragging curve in the back. It's a made in many sizes dress that brides pick for their bridesmaids expecting them to alter to fit. I am also shortening the ends of the halter style closure. The bride requested that the dress allow a certain amount of the girls feet to show...so it was marked in the dress shoes and the final length is about 6 inches shorter. Jane

I had a professional dry cleaner and alterations lady (friend) do my daughter's beaded gown for me..I just didn't want to do it and for $25.00....well, I let her do it. It had to come up about 8 inches to clear her shoes (and she is 5'8"). My friend did not trim the back but tapered the hem on the sides so that it just blended into the back. Because of the amount, I rather wish she had taken it off, but it looked lovely. The only thing is that she didn't get quite enouh off on the sides because of the taper. If you don't remove it from the train, be sure that you get it high enough on the sides so they don't step on their dress. It needs to start the taper near the back of the heel to keep from stepping on the garment when they move sideways. I always add a button to the back seam or side seam so they can pin their train when walking outside or dancing or whatever. I put a thread loop on the dress and a covered button on the train or vice versa, whichever shows the least.
