My friend bought a sun dress and it is too big under the arm at the side seam. She wants me to adjust it so it does not show the bra. How do I do this? Just by sewing the side seam smaller? |

If it doesn't do anything to the rest of the dress why not. Altering sometimes looks more difficult than it needs to be. |

Have her wear it and the pin it on the outside, taking in the seam until it feels comfortable, and then you can see before you sew whether or not the bra will still show. If the dress is all-around too big, it might still show b/c the armholes may have been cut deeper for a larger body. So test first with a little pinning. Then she'll know before you make a stitch and she can decide whether or not it is worthwhile. If the armholes scoop down too low, then you can consider taking up the straps or shoulder seams.

There might be a facing, in which case, you really should unsew it first and take it in exactly like the sundress (but upside-down), then re-sew it. Hassle, but if you don't, you'll get a big lump there. nancy |
