I haven't had as much time in the shop as I would like. I let this one dry since December, so it was ready. I have 2 more completely different ones in the shop drying with a couple of coats of finish on them. This is my favorite for now. http://users.hfx.eastlink.ca/~dwilkins/natbowl1.jpg http://users.hfx.eastlink.ca/~dwilkins/natbowl2.jpg I'm lucky I survived moms cooking :p

it's maple, technically it's called curly maple, the grains essentially were wrinkled, thats why the lines run vertically in the profile picture. It's also spalted, a type of fungus has attacked the wood and caused partial rot, and line to run erratically through the piece, very cool looking.

Dave doesn't know it yet, but I contacted an exclusive boutique in our province about carrying some of his things. They are going to get back to me.

Hey Mary, here in Ottawa we have a weekly local TV show on CTV-CJOH called Regional Contact. This show goes around the Ottawa Valley and does pieces on people, mostly artists, and their various talents, etc. Last September they did a piece on a woodturner (Jean-Gilles Francoeur) who did bowls just like Dave's. He would go out and find burls on the trees and take them home, dry and turn them into wonderful pieces (bowls, vases and sculptures). His work is available in two art galleries in Ottawa. Dave's work reminds me of that woodturner's work. Good luck with the boutique.

Judy, this is what Dave does. Any storm, etc. he goes out and finds burls. It is so hit and miss. Thanks for the good wishes everyone. This boy has talent, but no $$$, cross your fingers for him.

About the only show I watch on HGTV since they cancelled all the sewing/quilting/crafting shows is one called "American Masters" and they do what they do in Ottawa but they go all around the country (and I think Canada too) showcasing a wide variety of crafts and artful people. Dave would definitely qualify for that show too. What a talent! Violet I've decided to live forever - so far, so good.

That is gorgeous Dave. One of my son's friend's dad makes wood ink pens. They are beautiful. He showed us one made with a naturally purple wood and one with a pink wood. I think the purple wood was from Africa. He had several made from olive wood. He said he had started trying bowls. Do you mind if I print a pic of your bowl to show to him? |

No, be my guest Bama. Dave makes pens too. I have one on my desk right now that I use. I don't keep it with me or in my purse. If I lost it, I would feel bad.

Dave, your work is just stunning. I'm constantly getting comments from guests on your salt shaker. Now, about that bowl, I'm sure I could find a good spot for it so ... can you email me and give me some more details, wood options (if any given the work you have to do just to get the wood) and of course $$$$. Mary, it's just a matter of time before Dear Dave fills out his pockets with his work. It is just too nice to go unnotice. |

Dede, that bowl is spoken for, though I do have two more here in the finishing stage. They are about 9" or so in diameter. While they are not spalted (the black lines) they are curly (the wrinkled grain). I'll post some pics later on today. I do have a ton of Maple out in the shop, and a small ammount of birtch. I have a few more bowls comming in the next few weeks that are about 10 or so inches in diameter, next year I'll be turning them out in the 14" range and bigger. I have one on the lathe today, but they do have to dry. If it's the natural edge your after I can produce one soon, but with fresh cut wood that will warp, or the 6-9 month wait for one thats dried. I do know a guy who has some dry blanks he will part with, for a price. I have no idea what any of them are though. I'm lucky I survived moms cooking :p

I have done bowls, pepper mills, salt mills, wine stoppers, vase's, potatoe mashers, garden dibbers, boxes, toothpick dispensers, pen/pencils and key chains. I don't like doing the pen/pencils or keychains very much. They lack creative freedom, and every turner does them. http://users.hfx.eastlink.ca/~dwilkins/cdbowl1.jpg http://users.hfx.eastlink.ca/~dwilkins/cdbowl2.jpg http://users.hfx.eastlink.ca/~dwilkins/cdbowl3.jpg http://users.hfx.eastlink.ca/~dwilkins/cdbowl4.jpg http://users.hfx.eastlink.ca/~dwilkins/cdbowl5.jpg http://users.hfx.eastlink.ca/~dwilkins/vase.jpg There are some links to todays work, the vase is a personal favorite of mine.
