I am trying to pre-wash 100% black fabric for a quilt. After 2 washings and a drying it is still bleeding. Has anyone used a product that could help set the dye? Would a hot iron do the trick? I am concerned that over ironing would pull the fabric out of shape. I keep reading how important it is to press properly. |

Soaking in a vinegar bath helps sometimes.

I think it is retayne that stabilizes the dye in new fabric so it will not bleed. One tsp. per yd. of fabric in the wash.

put a white piece of cotton in the wash with it and if it comes out grey, then it is actual dye, alot of times fabric looks like it is bleeding but it is not, if that makes sense. i had a red like that, and yet when i put a piece of white cotton material in with it to test, the white still came out nice and white. |

I have heard that salt will also set the colour, never tried it though. Also, final rinse in very cold water will help set it. |

Since I posted this morning I've washed in vinegar, but not soaked. I washed in salt too. I have it drying now after several washings. If this doesn't work I'll try the retayne that Mary suggested. I do throw in a white wash cloth and yep, they come out gray. I'd rather color a couple of wash clothes than ruin a quilt. I love the color black too much to give up!! Thank you all for your suggestions. |

Have you tried overdying with some Rit ??? In a boiling pot with salt, dye, then wash and dry ??? re-dying MIGHT set the black. (I'm a black lover too, but have never had that problem...but I LOVE Rit...never had a problem with that either.)

I hate to say this, but, some blacks just run and there is not much you can do to stop it. You could take it back to the store and mention your problem and see what they say. I ask for a piece of a black to test and if the store owner won't do it I don't buy it. I have had the same problem with black running and it made a mess out of my wall hanging. |
