I bought Simplicity 4648 & Simplicity 4522 today to make capri pants and jeans for my 2 youngest dds. They are basically the exact same Lizzie McGuire pattern; just different sizes (ie: 4648- size 8-16 and 4522 size 3-6). My question is: the 4522 pattern has you use elastic in the waist and no zipper; the 4648 pattern has you put in a side zipper. I would like to make them both with elastic; is this ok? Is the zipper just for design purposes in the larger sizes or is it to compensate for the girls figures? My older dd is 8 yo and her waist is 25" and hips 28"-- so I would probably sew up the size 8... do you think I could just use the elastic? TIA! Jen |

If there are any darts leave them out -- that will give you the extra you need. I've done it for adults that way. Just cut straight across the little point at the top of the dart. If you are just turning the top down for casing You might want to add a little at the top to turn down. Dorothy |

I think as long as your bigger dd is happy with the look of an elastic waistband, then it's fine. It's certainly quicker and easier for you! The fit is looser, which is more practical for the smaller sizes (younger children) to dress, and also to fit, since the corresponding age group does not stand still!!!! But if your taller dd is wiggly or not too particular about the way fabric lays over her fanny, then by all means skip the zip.
