Hi all! I know it's been a long time since I've posted on here, but I'm back!! I'm getting married and I've been playing around with bridal sewing. To get a feel for working with these fabric types I'm making a corset/bustier first. It's crepe-back satin based on Simplicity # 5006, view A (the white one in the pic): http://simplicity.com/assets/5006/5006.jpg
I've made corsets before so that's not the problem. My issue is I want to add a layer of lace over the satin. I already sewed the satin pieces together (pressed but did not add boning yet), and i figured I'd add the lace so I can overlap the motif at the seams. does this make sense? and is it the right way to go about this? i'm really worried about making a mistake at this point because it would mean having sewing lines through the middle of my satin pieces. any suggestions appreciated! thanks!!

It is a little late for me to tell you this but I would have applied the lace to each piece before sewing. Then I would have treated the lace and satin as one piece of fabric. If there is a lining to the fabric, I guess you could apply the lace after the fact, sewing it in at the top but it would be much more complicated and you will have to deal with seams showing.

i was thinking of doing that, but i was afraid the motifs wouldn't line up that way. i really want to lap the edges of the lace over each other so it looks continuous, if this makes sense. anyone have any experience doing it that way?

That's a neat idea but I'm not sure how well it will match since your lace is flat and your garment will be shaped. I hope that if you do this it works well for you. You may need to sew twice to make it work too (once near the edge and then back some to relieve stress points). If you sew on the edges only and if there is any stress on the garment it may come apart (there may not be stress since it will be well reinforced).

I've done something like I think you want to do and I've placed the lace on by hand. I cut around the motive so that I didn't have seams in the lace. Since the lace doesn't ravel I laid it over itself. I would do the boneing, put the lace on and then the final lining to attach the seams at the top and bottom. Look at some bridal sewing books. It shows this. This way no seams, no bulk.

Hope it helps.

Do you have a dress form?? I would put your corset on the form and hand piece the lace on shaping it to the garment, lots of time but works, I did this on my wedding gown b/c the lace I used was $$$$$$$$$$$$$$ and I needed to use as little as possible.

I have done a large number of wedding gowns and many had lace on them. I have always cut around the motifs and applied them to harmonize closely with the rest of the lace. It has never been necessary to do them by hand. The stitches, if tiny and done with matching thread, disappear into the threads of the lace. MariLynntx
