This is the traveling, go visiting season. Ah summer vacations, how some of us look forward to them. So our question for this week is::::::
Do you like to go visit friends/family? Do you enjoy having them come visit you? Would you stay at their place or get a room somehwere and the same if they came to visit you? How long is long enough enough? What are your thoughts on the visits of friends/family? I am sure some of us have had the wonderful visits that turn into one week of pure chaos.

We usually go to visit and stay in a motel or hotel with our dog. We have an extra room for visitors.

I love to go and stay with my brother and his wife -we get on so well - staying with Tony's parents has got more complicated as there are more and more of us and they only have one spare room. We haven't quite had the courage yet to get to take the caravan down there and visit them but could be doing so this summer. We are finally getting Tony's Mum and Dad to stay with us for a couple of days as they are visiting Tony's brother in clink. It is impossible to get them out of Cornwall these days but these are exceptional circumstances. They will leave to stay with Tony's sister for weeks/Christmas and so on but not us. Perhaps we smell.

I try and visit my sister once a year for about 5 days. (since she's the only family I have, I don't have to bother with any other visits..she won't come here, she hates my husband..thats Ok...I understand why).
My husband visits his folks when he's on business in CA.

We've never had anyone visit us...ever in the 27 yrs we've been married. If they'd want to come, we'd put them up in a hotel. (we have NO space in our house and the ferrets would drive them crazy.)
We never visit or take vacations together, no where to board ferrets. I really don't wanna take 4 ferrets with me on vacation...one or two maybe...not 4.

We do both - stay in motels sometimes and sometimes we stay with the daughters/friends/etc. Depends on the situation and how much room they have and how many people are staying there. When we visit the one daughter we stay with her in-laws that live about 5 minutes away - more room and pet free - and they love having us. When the girls come here they all stay with us. At Christmas we had 6 adults and 2 kids and 1 baby here extra...wall to wall people but the kids love it when we are all together.
In a couple of weeks we are going to be all getting together but as the daughter that lives so far away is staying with her sister, we opted to stay in a motel because my dtr's house is way too small for all of us..but that's ok because we take the grandkids with us so we have a longer visit with them.

My ideal vacation is to just stay at home...not to have to get up and go to work each day....just relax and do what I want when I want. I will probably take a few days (3-4 max.) to go and visit my family - approx. a 5 hour drive from here.

I have always been the one travelling to visit my family. All the 25+ years that I have lived in the Ottawa area, I can count on my two hands the number of times that family have come to visit me. I think the longest anyone has stayed at my house was 2 nights. In my earlier years, I would go to visit my father every two weeks and all holidays. Over time it became once a month and many holidays. My mother died years ago and my father lived alone in a large farmhouse so that is where I would stay. Then a few years ago, when my father's health started to decline, it was back to bi-weekly trips in between longer trips due to his hospital stays. When he moved into an old folks home, I started staying at my aunt's house. I would get her bedroom and she would sleep on the sofa. I remember telling my aunt, brothers and sister that "once Dad dies I won't be making these trips very often". But after my father passed away...it was frequent trips again to clear up the estate. It has just been in the past year that I have been able to "phone" rather than "visit". I have driven through blizzards, snowstorms, freezing rain, road construction, and all kinds of Montreal traffic jams. I cringe just thinking of a long drive! This is why I plan my vacations to stay at home.

We do both. If we go see family and they have room we stay with them, if not we stay at a motel. Our plan is to soon buy a motor home so we can just come and go without worrying about a place to stay. That way we can stay longer when dh retires and do our own thing and visit folks.

Every so often we take a trip that isn't to visit. I love those trips but always end up feeling guilty because we used our vacation time and didn't see family. It never fails that someone askes in a disapointed voice about where we went. Not many people come here (Hot Arizona) in the summer and we try to leave and go somewhere cooler.

When I go to NB, I always stay at dad's place. When we went further south East, we always stayed at my uncle's place and I remember wonderful times. the few times I went to the US, it was hotel/motel times and I have to admit I quite enjoyed it. I lived in Toronto for a few years and had friends visit on a few occasions and they always stayed at my place. Imagine 3 kids, 3 adults and a cat in a 1 bedroom apartment; chaos but a lot of fun. As long is long enough? All depends who's answering your question. In my case, it doesn't matter as long as you respect my environment and my person. More than 1 month, you start paying rent.

We tend to camp or tent when we holiday. We have extra room for visitors and love having them come, we don't go visit the kids, they don't have room for us, so we usually send them plane fare to come out this way for a visit, we live in such a gorgeous area, we don't really need to go anywhere! We do go down south to California to see the husbands brother, which I like and we stay with them. We have friends we go to visit and stay with them as well, and in return they come to our house. I like having company, I find a week is great unless there are lots of uncontrollable kids, then one day is plenty!!! We do plan on making a trek across Canada to Toronto and Windsor to see my brother before he gets too much older and Windsor is also my husbands birthplace, and he's never been back since he was 3. Hopefully that will be next fall.

JAN!!!! I bet it's not the smell I bet it's the eyeballs that scares them off. LOL We rent a room. Vacation is suppose to be just that a vacation and it's not that if you have to wash dishes and housekeeping. Bring on the maids. :bg:
I'm regressing back into my youth, I just have to figure out how I'm going to convience my body to come along with me.

I will either stay in a motel or camp if the weather is nice. As far as people staying at my home, they are more than welcome, but don't expect me to stop doing what I always do. By this I mean, I smoke and I am not going to stop because you are staying in my house. I think you get the idea. One week to me is enough.

In my opinion visiting family isn't vacation. But that wasn't the question.....

I only have 1 sister and if we were to go to visit her and stay the night we would get a hotel. She has several cats and my hubby don't care for them. Her house smells "catty" if you know what I mean.

We do go to visit my hubbys family...there are 8 brothers and sisters...I suppose we could take a weeks vacation and spend a night with each....just not much into that. They all have their own lives and it is difficult to go spend very much time there.

This past vacation was one of the best we have ever had!! We rented a condo for a whole week....there was a person that came in and tidy up and changed out the towels but other than that we did cook a few meals there and it was SUPER!! Like I said one of the BEST vacations I have ever been on. We will for sure do that again!!

My favorite vacation is going on a cruise. I've been on several (8) so I'm an old pro at them. When I come home from the cruise I'm looking for the waitress or waiter to come fill my drink or make my bed. :nah: Tell me I'm not spoiled.

Ahem, I would think a week is more than ample time for visiting. I myself never stay more than a day or two. I prefer staying in a nice room somewhere to staying with relatives. My husband agrees.

We are now almost thru one half of a two week visit. :re:

Mary,
I've been wondering how you were doing with your visitors there.

I think 3 days is enough for a visit. After our visiting relatives left, I told hubby that some day I want to build a small guest house. No matter how much room you have, it would just be nicer to have a separate place for visitors to stay. We would all enjoy it more. We live too far from any hotels for anyone to stay there. Besides, it would seem silly when we have enough room here.
Hubby's idea of a vacation is visiting one of his brothers. We've always stayed at their houses when we visit. After 3 days I'm ready to go back home.

My idea of a vacation is staying in a hotel at the beach. Unfortunately, hubby is a homebody. Most of my beach trips are with my mother.

MIL, I keep telling hubby that some day he IS going to take me on a cruise. Maybe for our 25th anniversary. 7 years to go. :re:
