Question #1~

How difficult is it to make one of those jar quilts??? Would this be something for a beginner??? I found some cute frog fabric and I think this would be perfect for one of these! :bluewink:

Question #2~

What is your opinion of those "Quilt in a Day" books by E. Burns??? I met a lady that swears by them....is it worth the money??

Jar quilt is easy enough for a beginner. Eleanor Burns is great, I won't listen to her as her voice sends chills down my back lol but she has great books. :bluesmile

Her books are really good ... very basic and easy to follow. A bunch of us swears by her ... I have a few of her books (4 or 5)

I haven't seen her shows as they are not CC so I can't understand her and I don't have to worry about her voice (Joanne).

You can easily get them at 40% or 50% off with coupons from Joann's (use their coupon or Michael's coupon) - big savings!

I love the Quilt In A Day books...........I got "Still Stripping After All These Years" for Christmas and have really enjoyed it. I have never made on of her quilts but have several of her books that I refer to for questions. I like her laid back attitude about quilting.................I have never seen her show so don't know about her voice. I have read in several books how she used the QIAD business to support herself and two sons after her husband walked out on her. She never lets it be forgot that HE walked out..................and I say to her, go for it!!!

So if I could meet one of the quilting "diva's" sometime I would love to meet her.

Brenda, I didn't know you were hearing impaired, but just so you will know what her voice is like, she sounds like a kindergarden teacher when she talks to on her show. Very expressive with her instructions. Just like a teacher would talk to a class of 5 year olds. Drives me up the walls too. I can't watch her for too long. But she is very informative so I guess her books would be that way also.

I have a question: When I prewash my fabric I use a little detergent but sometimes the fabric still smells like the dye. Can I use some fabric softner and then iron some sizing in when I take it out the dryer? I've noticed this with my fabric I use to make my garments. I have to wash them twice once before constuction and once after.
I'm regressing back into my youth, I just have to figure out how I'm going to convience my body to come along with me.

I like E BURNS> she is so good with instructions and her books are great! I have several and love them~ She does have a unique voice for sure and it is one that a kindergarten teacher would use with her students too. I listen to her on the www.quilterschannel.com and have learned so much from her, but there are those days when she has to go. know what I mean? LOL!
That's my story and I am sticking to it~ LOL!!!!!!!!

I made a jar quilt for my son, it was one of the first quilts I did and it was pretty easy. Pics of the quilt are here:

Ed's Bug Jars (http://www.geocities.com/edf1993/bugjarquilt.html)

And the directions I used were from here:

Love the bug quilt for Edward, Shari! I can't find woodgrain fabric I like for the advent quilt let alone for a bookcase in a quilt. But, I do plan on doing a bug quilt or two for my grandsons.

That bug jar quilt is so cute and it would be such fun to hunt out the bug fabric. In my case I think I would need to make it for my grand daughter though..............for a girl she really likes bugs! Ok, another project for the "to do someday" file.

Someone on one of those sites Jo listed mentioned selling packets of Bug fabric on ebay.............that would make it really fast and easy.

You did a great job on Edwards quilt...........take a bow MOM!!

Sounds like a spring project for 06 to me, how about you Norma?

Yes, OKnana...............I would love to do one (but would have to do two). Right now though I have taken an oath on my rotory cutter that I will FINISH what I have going BEFORE I start something else.

But I could start collecting bug fabric now................. :bolt:

I liked the one with books on the shelves. I am thinking about makiing one for DD(14yo) who loves to read. I was going to jot down some names of her books on her shelf & then have her sister (with the nice handwriting) print the names with paint pens. Her Bday is in Sept. so I would have to start soon though & I have so many other projects waiting. Maybe I won't have to go to work this fall & will have time to do it.

Have you finished your June/July Blocks? I see you have done your themed house blocks. Cute! I have the June and July blocks done but not the July themed house one. I am making 4 other themed house quilts for Christmas and I have not got their June houses done yet!! I am like everyone else, have too much going on~ I started too many projects at once. Got home last night from Louisiana and am too pooped to sew today. Think I am going to hit the bed early tonight so I can rise at 5 to be at work at 6. Maybe tomorrow night I can sew some. Hope you find some time yourself! Looking forward to seeing your christmas swap block too! I just love my sizzy swap one! So tickled that Mary W and Joanne liked theirs too! Well Have a nice evening!

I can't believe it.....today I was looking for some fun new goodies to put on one of the boards that I moderate over on the Crafters Community and I found this....Book Shelf Squares (http://www.blockcentral.com/freequiltpatterns.shtml) There are several block with books in different positions and a few other neat things that could be on your shelves too!!

I would love to make one of these too!!

I have been eyes the jar quilts~just last night I purchased some fabric of frogs off ebay!!! I can't wait for it to arrive!!
I have also see the jar quilts done with fruit fabrics that looks almost edible!! Those are really neat too!!

So Joanne...do you think you could teach a group of us how to do the book shelf quilts??? Pretty Please???

Hey Lyn, try this website for the woodgrain fabrics, not sure of the prices, but it would be worth it. I could also check this weekend in OHio for you, the quilt shops are pretty pricey though, up to you.

Hey girls, I will try to find out where I ordered my woodgrain fabric again. I love it. It is exactly what I need to do my jar quilt (someday)!!!
Not going to start on that yet bc I have too many quilts going on right now but at least you can get your order in for some beautiful woodgrain. I will try also to see if I can scan a pic of it. Got to run to work though right now. See you all on here tonight. Hugs.(p.s. it was like 8.95 per yd.) cheapest I have found lately~ I also ordered the veggie fabric to go with it. I am going to redo my kitchen next yr in all veggies and thought I would use this to carry out my theme.

Thanks for the book shelf site! It is just what I wanted. Now for a newbie question do I just divide the square to get my measurements? I was thinking about doing bigger squares like 9" or 12". Can I just go double or 1 1/2 times to get the right size? I have never done this before & don't want to mess up.

if anyone wants to see my woodgrain fabric please feel free to pm me. I cannot seemto make it small enough to download it here. Sorry about that~
I subcribe to the http://www.peacebypiecedesigns.com site and Lois does a newsletter. In one of them she had her labor of love quilt and it was canning jars and i wrote her inquirying of the woodgrain fabric she uses. ( First let me tell you if you subscribe to her newsletter you get a free pattern each month for her labor of love quilt~ Okay she told me she had someone that she orderded it from and had good luck. So I did, and had good luck as well. Now I am passing this info on to anyone that wants it.
Her name is Cheryl Ebens her email is <email address removed for privacy> She charged me 7.95 yd/ and shipping. I thought this was very reasonable. She is from Ashton, Il. Her little cottage is called Cottage Garden Quilts.
She was very quick in her email reply to me and quick in sending my order right out to me. She has no website. her phone number is 815-453-7534 10am to 5pm. Be sure and tell her how you got your info, so she won't worry about it. i ordered from her around 25 April of this yr from her.
I wish my pic would go thru, bc it is nice fabric~~~~
Then I ordered my veggie fabric from Fatquartershop.com I think. Kim is very nice to do business with~ I cannot remember if this is where I ordered the veggie fabric or not though.

I just got this from Lois Fletcher. Thought I would pass it along for those interested in woodgrain fabric. Take a look at Lois' Labor of Love quilt. It is jars ful of veggies on a shelf~ It is beautiful~ She sells the fat eights of fabric for the veggies too~

Well thanks, Dorene! I know the shop does still have some woodgrains left. Also, I have food fabrics on my web site if anyone is interested. I am running low on the fat eighth sets, but am thinking of ordering more bolts if they are still available. But I do have individual fat quarters of most of the fabrics in the sets.

Thanks again for passing on the information to your group.

Lois

I am planning on using my bugs from the bug swap to make some bug quilts for my boys for when they move into big boy beds (and since that's still a couple of years off, I figure by then I should have them done and found all of the different fabrics I'll need to make a twin size quilt).
