I'm thinking about upgrading from my Bernina 830. What Bernina machines after the 930 are in the same field? Example- which ones are still metal, no internal plastic or synthetic material, and are not computerized? This would be mostly used for quilting and some garments. This is the range of machines I am interested in, not the latest most expensive ones.

As far as I know, the only machine that Bernina makes that is mechanical is the 1008. I don't know anything about it.

This link will take you to all the machines and it shows that machine to be mechanical. It is a link to information about each of the machines as you select them. The line that most of the Bernina lovers point to as the entry level quilting line is the Active line, esp the 230 and 240. I'm not sure, but I think that the lowest of the machines starts at around 600 (from my dealer) and that model is the 220. I bellieve that this line of machines (220-240) are a little smaller than the full sized machines but I THINK they have the needle up and down and the leg lift for the presser foot. Many people take these to quilting guilds. These machines, including the 1008 are all made by Bernina and have the good hook system that Bernina is famous for (which has be changed in the Artista machines). One of the most popular machines that is used by quilters that I know is the Virtuosa 153. It is a good solid machine with a few more bells and whistles but is being replaced by the 430 and 440 machines. If you were interested in this machine you might be able to make a good deal on it. The 440 has the new automatic stitch regulator on it and is really the "talk of the town" among quilters. It and it's companion machine, the 430 DO embroider with a lap top hooked up to them. (Of course, they are computerized.)

Any of the machines that will embroider or have a screen will be computerized.

As for the mechanics of the machines. All Bernina made machines are still almost total made with metal mechanized parts. I used to have a Pfaff 1475 and a Bernina 1530 purchased in the same year and it would amaze me how heavy the Bernina was in comparison...at least 1/3 heavier. I think that my 200 might be heavier than the 1530. My dealer has a machine without the working parts and the outside case and it is all cast metal...even the "empty machine" is pretty impressive.

You have a wonderful machine, even if you purchase new, I'd hold on to that one...it is a favorite for MANY of the Bernina lovers! I hope you find a great machine that fits your sewing style and budgetand a dealer that is wonderful to work with! There is just so much out there! Happy hunting!!!

Sandra, if you go back to the Bernina message boards again at

www.BerninaUSA.com

(I think I found a posting from you yesterday.) There is a neat new posting in the message board under quilting. The posting is pretty new and is labeled with something about 153QEE (I think the letters are correct). The posting has to do with a special discussion board about this machine. There is a new thread that has been added about what happens when one of these machine is accidentally is dropped. It is pretty interesting. Although it isn't recommended, I suspect that most Berninas perform the same.
