I'm really annoyed, I spent so much time making this summer dress (http://members.aol.com/_ht_a/juneharlow/images/2005%2006-28%20p0004267%20trim.jpg) , and now it turns out that the material wrinkles badly across the front if I sit down, even for a few minutes! I wore it to work the other day and had to keep spritzing myself with water to try and get rid of the wrinkles ! I felt like a real idiot ! I think it's 100% cotton print, some sort of cheap material. Perhaps I should have gone with some sort of polyester blend ? Is there any way to save this dress by adding iron-on interfacing, maybe that would make it wrinkle less? Thanks

Cotton and linen will do that to you. Is your dress lined? |

No, I didn't use any lining, I was using the "quick-and-dirty" method of construction.

Lining a garment helps protect it and it does help with wrinkling. |

Thanks Dede, I'll try that in the future if I use any more cotton prints.

Dresses with no give need more ease. It may be just a little bit tight for the fabric. The result would be that when you set down, the garment wrinkles naturally because your butt curves giving wrinkles in the front. If the garment it tight, it wrinkles just like you had pressed it that way because the pressure presses it. If you still have 5/8 in seams and it won't show, (sometimes after the garment is worn it will), you might try letting your seams out to 3/8 in. decreasing the seam slightly from the waist to the hips and down. That will give you 1 extra inch if you have 4 seams and that might be enough to relax the dress.

Thanks Pam ! I think that explains it. I did alter the fit on the pattern to make it more snug around the waist & hips. However I've "cooked my goose" by making nice serged seams that can't be altered. I think this'll be a good one to mark up to "experience" and perhaps I'll remake the pattern, either with different fabric, or as you suggest, with more ease around the hips. Thanks so much
