Does anybody have good directions (of the tried and true variety) for taking measurements and making a tricot slip?

I keep finding directions for making one out of cotton on the internet. I am doing that as well, but some small friends of mine want to make theirs out of tricot like their mommies.

rumor has it that there are good directions in "the best of sewing with nancy" book by nancy zeiman. if you have that book could you look at it and post a brief description of the measurements needed to make a good fitting slip please?

Thanks
Melanie

the last time I made one it was hip measurement plus 4 inches.

measure your waist with elastic so it is comfortable but taut and cut elastic.

divide fabric into 1/4ths and same with elastic.. mark with pins. Match pins and stretch elastic to fit. Stitch (serge - place elastic 1/4 inch away from raw edge so when your serge it is cutting the tricot not the elastic or match up elastic to raw edge and lift blade so it won't cut) elastic to slip.

Add lace if desired. A nice soft slip lace. (but you can use wrights hem lace..if you want it wider you can stitch (serge) it together.

Match raw edges and stitch (serge-rolled hem, wooly nylon) together.

Nancy's is a pattern kit. I bought it to get the tricot which I couldn't get here. The one floating on the net for cotton is essentially the same pattern and made as Westbrook describes. One doesn't make a tricot slip really form fitting so same measurements as for cotton should do. How about cutting some 'big girl' slips down for 'little girls'

Thanks for the replies. That helps a lot. I am just finishing up a cotton slip as per the internet directions and it is looking great. I will try a tricot one for myself this afternoon and then help the girls do theirs tomorrow afternoon when they come.
