Just wanted to share: Yesterday I got together with my mother and she helped me trace out my favorite pair of pants to make a pattern. That perfect pair of pants is hard to find, but once you find it, you want all of your pants to fit that way! It was a little tricky b/c each leg has a front, side, and back panel, with some easing and darts that help form the shape. We cut up an old bed sheet to make a muslin, and sure enough, the fit was perfect! I have another project I need to finish up this week, and then I can begin with my fashion fabric. Can't wait. I might even learn how to post a picture and show you when I'm done.

My new pants are done! It took a bit longer than I'd have expected, b/c when you make your own pattern, it doesn't come with instructions! Overall, I am very pleased with them. They fit so nicely and feel great when I wear them. I'm also really happy b/c now I have a pattern to work from for many variations. I wore them all afternoon, just as soon as I finished making them, until about an hour ago when I folded them up to pack for vacation. I have more packing to do, or else I'd take the time now to take a picture and post it here. I'm sure I'll get a shot of them on my trip to Portland OR, and I'll post in about a week.

Yup, you can make endless variations on this pattern. Another kind of tissue, another colour, one time you put a pocket on top of it, another time no pockets at all, etc. etc. Happy to hear that you have a good fitting pair of trousers and the most important thing: you have the pattern for it. With kind regards,

I am almost finished a pair of work pants for DH that I painstakingly measured crotch length, did the muslin, basted it together, made adjustments here and there, finally cut out the fabric, made the pants, basted on the waistband, and he doesn't like the way the pockets are. I could shoot him. For a pair of denim pants, with no zipper, straight legs and elastic waist, I've spent more time on these than a dressy blouse. But all in all I am really happy with what I learned about fitting pants, and am now ready to make a pair for myself, starting with the muslin again. As far as DH, no wonder I don't sew for him, he's too fussy. The pants are just going to get holes in them (he's a welder) and all dirty and greasy, so who cares if the pockets don't sit flat?? They would if he'd wear the pants where they are supposed to go and not under the belly! Glad to hear the pants are so great Andrea. I love it when I make something for myself that is a perfect fit.
