Hello all. I'm fairly new here at Sew What's New, but so far you all are terriffic! Here's my question. Does anyone have or know where I can find a wearing ease chart for children's sizes. I'm drafting a couple of patterns for a friend's 3 yr old (she's sort of between a 2T and a Child 3 in measurements) and I don't think the eases for adults would be right considering that if I give her 3 more inches in the chest that increases the circumference by about 16%. Thanks, Barbara |

I googled and googled, couldn't find anything for a kids version. The only thing it mentions on one of my patterns is that the finished garment measurements are the standard body measurements plus wearing ease plus design ease. As we all know, wearing ease is the amount needed to be added to be worn comfortably, the rest is design ease. How to calculate that is something I could only guess at. Do any of you sewing geniuses have the answer to this? MaryW

Barbara, Don't know if this will help, but I went into my archive of patterns and had one for a Jon-Jon type overall and the chest measurement for size 2 was 20"--pattern measurement 24 1/2. Size 3-chest measurement 22--pattern 25 1/2". This particular pattern fit pretty close to the body. Made those for dgs who turned 16 last week. Hard to let go of those patterns You may even want to post this question on the Martha Pullen message board. Seems like someone always comes up with an answer. Good luck Pat |

After the kids got to about size 2 I used the ease of the pattern. I'd just take the child's measurments and use the amount of east the pattern used for that measurment...regardless of size. My kids were all very thin. Right now I'm getting ready to do the flower girl's dress for my dgd and she measures less than 3 but is tall enough to be a 5 or 6 so I'm going to cut out a rough draft of the pattern using size 3 width and size 5 length and see if it works for her...I've already told my dd that I'll cinch the dress up with elastic. My kids always wore their home made dresses for years (poor things).

I use the Wild Ginger Child's Play program and it suggests the same ease charts for children as it does for the adult PatternMaster Boutique programs. I have found that children (I sew for my granddaughters ) need a fair amount of ease because they need to move around in their clothes. If you look at catalogues for children's clothing you will usually see that they are fit very loosely. An added bonus for this philosophy is that the clothes fit a little longer. I usually errored on the side of too much rather than too little. They can always grow into something if it is too big. HTH Mary |

I'm going to go with the "use the adult ease" suggestion. I'd use the pattern ease if I HAD a pattern, but I'm drafting these myself. I'll post photos when I get them done. The outfits are a tank top and 4-gore skirt (blue background Dora the Explorerer print) and a sleeveless full A-line dress with pleats in the front and a short jacket (Care Bears and rainbows). Since my sweet fiance is going on an unexpected golf outing this weekend I should be able to get a lot done. Wish me luck and thanks again to all of you! Barbara |

I sew for the grands and one of the girls is very tall and very skinny and I have done what Pam does. I make the smaller size that her measurements fit and stretching them into the height she needs. I just make sure if it is a dress I get the waist were it belongs and I get the crotch depth where it belongs on pants.
