Hi. I need some help. I have taken on the project of making 20 costumes for a dance team in my area. The costume look a lot like the Tina Turner/Flapper dresses, except it's in two pieces. A skirt and a tank top. I will have to apply the loose chainette fringe to both pieces to give it the look. But, a friend of mine who sews (for 40+ years), says that I may have a problem applying the fringe to the LYrca fabric. She says it will stretch out the Lycra. Well, what can I do? Is there some other fabric that would work well for dance costumes? My friend did say that if I could find fringe with an elastic band at the top for application, it would stretch with the fabric and not stretch it out of shape. But, she doesn't think I will be able to find such fringe as she has looked for it it in the past. Any insight or advice would be much appreciated.
Please help! :nervous:

I had a thought, if I just sewed the nonstretchy fringe onto an elastic band, would that work?

You might be better off making your own fringe and sewing that to elastic as whatever the fringe is attached to won't stretch. Maybe attaching the fringe to a strip of the same lycra would be easier. I'm thinking back to my daughter's dance stuff, and usually the fringe was on some kind of taffeta or satin and only the back was lycra.

http://www.flappercostumes.com/fringe_black_sexy_package.html

take a look at the back photo of this 2 piece costume. It has a zipper. further down you will see the skirt it has puckering around the waistband, so may be lycra based, if so, the skirt will have to be at least the same as the hip measurements and a band with elastic put on the waist area. The band will then stretch to pull over the seat of the dancer.

But you will probably be able to do a combination of fabrics, to get this look -
but can you provide a photo of what the dance teacher is wanting? Because I'll bet that she has an idea in her head, but if you don't have at least a photo you are not going to make what she wants.

Okay - this photo is a lycra top , and a skirt with lycra pants.... so the skirt is not lycra.
"Lycra top with fringe trim on front. Shelf liner. Short skirt with fringe trim on front and back and attached lycra trunks. "

The top has a liner sorta like a bra for the front. probably with elastic on the under breast area. I'm still wondering how they handle the stretch of the lycra and fringe. Usually you have to pull lycra a bit while applying non-stretchy other fabrics or trim, the amount of stretch depends on the amount you need it to stretch for the purpose you are using it for. You possibly could use lycra here with a very little bit of stretch, and then have a silt opening in the back to allow for more stretch to get it on then close with a heavy duty hook and eye (similar to the ones on the front of pants.) or use a swimsuit hook in the back .

The trunks under the skirt - just regular ones. Then you could attach the fringe on a tapered skirt. Narrower at top near the waistband and slightly wider at the hips. If you did the minimum stretch for this fringe, you should be okay. BUT if not okay then you will need an opening and another heavy duty waistband type hook closing.

It looks as if you have two rows of 6" lightweight fringe on each piece. I hope you have a good source of purchasing it. It's been difficult to find online recently. Especially Red or silver.
