Okay, I'll be the dummy for this go-round... LOL. After we make the block (3 fabric pieces) then what.. It will not fit with our other blocks.. I read every word .. Did I miss that part?? I learned long ago not to assume, so I await the answer.. :nc: :nc:

Hi Libby, yes seems there is a paragraph missing but anyways here it is. You cut out a background fabric (your choice of color) 12 1/2" X 12 1/2" and then you can hand sew your block on top or use your machine to do a blanket stitch and/or turn under 1/4" on all sides and sew down that seam.

Ok I need some help in knowing how to cut the block. Is it just a square or an angle? I don't know much about cutting and need some help, or maybe I need a LOT of help.

Thanks

Thanks, Jo, for the quick answer.. I really appreciate it.. I had fun with that coloring site.. I could sit ther all day and try different color combinations.. note to rodi 88.. if you are talking about jo's answer to me, she said 12 1/2 X 12 1/2.. That means a 12 1/2 inch square block.. to sew the tumbling block onto..

Rodi, do you mean the backing square or the block? The block has the template. The background fabric is a square of 12 1/2" X 12 1/2"

I wonder if we should cut the backgroung a little bigger say 13" x 13" just incase our zig zag takes up some of the size then cut to 121/2 x 121/2?? Hopalongdonna :Canada: :nervous:

Yes, it would not hurt to start with maybe a 13 x 13 block, applique, etc. the tunbling block to the square block and then square up the 13 x 13 to 12-1/2 x 12-12. You are right when you blanket stitch, applique on fabric sometimes it will take a small portion so I have found i'm better off starting say about 1/2 inch bigger all around then square it up to correct size. Better a littler bigger than too small when it's finished.

Donna, if you feel your fabric is pulling some then by all means cut a larger square. When we square up our blocks it will be take down to it's size.

Need to see if this is right or not before I start cutting. My printer was off, so I took the template to a copy machine and enlarged it. It measures 41/2 from point to point on all sides, that includes the seam allowance. Is that right? Also would like to know how to cut the block without using the template, just incase I want to do something else.

Rodi, if you look at the template it measures exactly 4", arrow to arrow. Now I didn't measure with seam allowance to check if 4 1/2" is the measurement as I used my 1/4" ruler. You can use plastic or cardboard to make a sturdy template. Duplicate on computer paper to make extras to do your block with.

I guess I just have a hard head, and con't seem to understand this quilting thing, even with good teacher Joanne. when I printed the template it didn't measure exactly 4" from arrow point to arrow point., is there a way I can set my printer to print different? I know this is really simple for those of you that do a lot of quilting, maybe one day the fog will clear out of my head. lol

Thanks

Even printer don't do exact measurements so this is why I use my ruler afterwards to remeasure to make sure I have what I need. Take a look at this site Rodi, it shows a 60 degree angle which this block is. See if it helps.

Now now ladies, try it first. When you have sewn pieces 1&2 together remember not to sew right to the end, this will give you the ease to sew piece 3.

Rodi, have you tried it again?

Made it ---- Hello, I've just barely gotten mine cut out.. My printer did not make the template right.. I had to start from scratch and make a new one..Took hours and hours, or so it seemed.. Then I was so disheartened , I had to distract myself with something else so that I could recover..Now I finally have them cut out and I am afraid to start sewing..Is there a leftie out there who can tell me the best place for me to start sewing the 3rd piece.. I seem to remember reading a caution somewhere in the past about an easy way to get it right, by where you started from..????? any ideas???? Hard ?? of course it is, its shape is the first clue there.. (Hardest substance, you know) :bg: :bg:

Hey Girls, Guess What ! ! ! ! I get the last laugh, after all.. I remembered that starting place for piece 3 of the tumbling block, and it went together perfectly on the first try... YES< I am breaking my arm patting myself on the back.. I deserved a break after the trouble I had making the new template.. My solution is you start at the V and stitch one side out to the outside , then go back to the middle of the V and stitch the other seam from there to the outside.. Works great.. No puckering from trying to pivot.. I have mine basted onto the 12 1/2 in. block, will stitch it on with a blanket stitch, I think.. :bg: :bg: :bg:

Hello O mighty Leader,
I am catching up on myself....I have sent you my piccies , one is of a fabulous garden I visited in Cornwall called the Eden Project where they have HUGE geodesic domes of tropical environments - hence the domes and banana leaves.
The other is my baby blocks where I got so confused as to how to put it together that I did them as paper piecing and didn't make too good a job of that either! Heigh ho!
love and kisses, Jan

I looked and looked and looked at the instructions for the Baby Block.
I cut out the fabric and looked and looked and looked at the pieces.
I walked past and walked past and walked past my sewing machine.
I was sure, even though all of YOU ended up with a Baby Block, I was going to end up with a TEEPEE. There is no way, I kept telling myself, that I was going to end up with a block that was FLAT.

Today, I had a burst of self-confidence and sewed those pieces together and...what do you know! It worked! It's not a tent after all! Sometimes, I amaze myself. Thanks Jo! Will send pic shortly.

To the rest of you...your blocks look great. I love peeking in the albums!

well let me share my experience with my blocks I made! For the life of me, Mine look like giant building blocks!!! LOL!!!! I can't get mine small for nothing. I cut that template Jo had for us in pieces and made them 2.50 inches and it looked small then. But no way hosea I can get more than 3 to a 12.50 block! If you will notice I had to cut off the top of that top block to get it to fit on my square~
How do I do these things I do not know but always do somehow~~~~ :bang: Wait till we have to use our tree bark fabric. Mine will look like a California Sequoyah~~~~~ :bluewink:

Glad to hear you tried and all worked out. As the famous saying goes "The lesson is in the exercise"

I am working on the last four blocks, is everyone ready to square up their blocks? If there are enough of you I will hold a chat to teach how to square these up. Because of the time zones I will do two so please put your name here if interested.

I'm ready, all of mine are finally caught up and done. I'm in PST until daylight savings changes again (we don't go on it).

I (and maybe there are others) don't know how to "do a chat". Some of us are not only new to quilting, but new to computers as well! I, too, would like to get my blocks squared up. My time zone is Pacific Standard. Will someone out there in cyberspace please explain to me how to get in on a "chat"? Thank you!

Gee, I am going to be one smart cookie thanks to Jo!

For those needing how to chat. On the main page of the site you will see "chat" which is this url http://sew-whats-new.com/chat/index.shtml you wait for the grey screen to finish, type in your name, press connect and that is all there is to it.

The way I will do the chat is everyone will ask questions as I am teaching you on paper so have a ruler, pencil and paper ready. I will post when I am going in ahead of time.
