Hi all,
I know that some of you here know that our Marine son is currently in Iraq and that his unit took more casualties this week. Although we have not heard from him since Sunday, we did not get the bad news other families here in Ohio did. We ache for all of the military personnel and families in these current world conflicts and the ever-present danger is felt through our bodies constantly.

I can't imagine what you must go through having your son overseas in the military and having to wait and wait and wait to know how he is or where or what is happening. My thoughts are with you and the other people on this board who have family serving in the military. Thank you for your courage and your sacrifice! Laura

Thanks ladies for your words of kindness. I pray a lot and cry a lot. Remember the fear you felt when you let your teenager drive out the driveway for the first time alone? This is hundreds of times worse. Thanks again.

I keep all the military in my thoughts everyday. Every day I hope no more die. Over the 21 yrs my husband was in the AF, there were 'small' conflicts, large 'disturbances' and the things you never hear about, because the government will not tell you. (sometimes your spouse can't tell you either, but little by little over the years, things are said.)
Not all the military die in 'wars'. Some die in accidents, here at home and wherever they're stationed. Either by their own hands, hands of fellow military or 'local people'.
I'm glad your son is Ok Melanie. My wish for you is that he comes home to live a long and happy life. [[[ ]]]

Melanie my thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family and the families of all the brave young men and women fighting in Irag and Afghanistan. I live just a few blocks from Tinker Air Force Base here in Oklahoma and Midwest City put a sign up over the main gate at Tinker recently that says "Land of the Free Because of The Brave!" We all have to stand tall, whether we believe in the the war they are fighting or not, and be proud of our men and women in uniform and pray for them every day and every time we're reminded of the war they are fighting to keep us free and safe and be proud that we are Americans.

I really thank you for your consoling words and expressions and I hope you are spared these circumstances. DH and I both served as well and there is a certain closeness to others who have. Thanks and I wish strength to all families in these times.

What would we do without the Marines! That is such a neat branch of the service! However, there is not a Marine mother out there that sees her son go off to war that doesn't deserve a medal by the time he returns. Our prayers, and the prayers of many are with your son, you, the other Marines, the wives, fathers and other family members of that unit!

No, but I am glad that you could go. I am sure there was a crowd. There will be memorial services for the Columbus unit.

They buried one of the local Marines that is from the same Unit that Melanies son is in today. There was a Fire Truck with it's ladder extended over the Route for the Funeral Procession with a Giant American Flag hanging from it. The Boy and Girl Scouts where going along the Route handing out small Amercian Flags. Police and Fire Depts from all over NEO where there to Honor the young man.
They where talking about it on the local Talk Radio Show when I was coming home from work tonight. I guess the young man had a 1957 Chevy that he was in the process of restoring before he was shipped out for Duty. They had it in the Proscession but half way IT stopped running, so the people riding in it and people along the side of the road pushed it the rest of the way. It was his pride and joy and his family wanted it to be there for him.
The caller remarked about how many teenagers where there, but added that there where babies in strollers to Seniors in wheelchairs there also. She mentioned how moving it was to see WW2 Vetrans of War with their hats on coming to attention and saluting as the Hurse approched them. You could hear a pin drop it was so quite.

I didn't get a chance to go to the Memorial, I wanted to but work got in the way.

Slain Marines honored

Cleveland event brings community together in grief

By Stephen Dyer

Beacon Journal staff writer

CLEVELAND - On a bright, sunny summer afternoon, Karen Parker clutched three American flags in her left hand and the dog tags around her neck in her right. Then she wept. Alone.

The brief ceremony that began at noon in downtown Cleveland and honored the Marines killed in Iraq this week from a battalion based in Brook Park was too much for Parker.

Her 20-year-old son, Lance Cpl. Russell Parker, is in the same battalion, but had survived this week's attacks. However, knowing her son is so near to danger was all she could bear.

The 43-year-old's sobs brought a veteran to his feet.

Ken Moore of Uniontown served between the Vietnam and Korean wars. He reluctantly calls himself a veteran, almost apologetic that he never faced the danger Parker's son faces today. He put his right arm around Parker's shoulder.

Vashon Renee McIntyre of Shaker Heights also heard Parker's sobs. She too joined Moore at Parker's side.

She lent her left arm to Parker's shoulder.

Moore and McIntyre's arms crossed behind Parker's back -- locking in firm support of a woman and son they had never met.

``These are my new friends,'' Parker -- a Clevelander -- said later.

They all came to witness a ceremony as notable for its brevity as its emotion. Cardboard boxes filled with tissues and American flags made the rounds. Grizzled men wore garrison hats describing how and when they served their country. Seabees. Marines. Soldiers. Airmen. All attended a ceremony too familiar for those who serve and those who love them.

``These are young people,'' Cleveland Mayor Jane Campbell said. ``These are unfinished lives.''

Then came a comment for the families who have lost so much so suddenly.

``Cleveland cares for you,'' she said. ``You are not alone.''

The ceremony was also attended by Columbus Mayor Michael Coleman, whose son J.D. is serving in the same unit that took the losses this week. He said when he and his wife heard 14 Marines were killed in Haditha, his mind turned to one thing.

``I know who's in Haditha,'' he explained after the ceremony. He and his wife immediately prayed for their son, then for those who lost their sons.

Then he waited. No news came.

``When you don't get any news, it's the best news you can get,'' Coleman said.

As a lone piper intoned Amazing Grace, Karen Parker wept again. A throng of photographers swooped in for the shot.

The photographers, though, missed the arms behind Parker that held her upright. The 67-year-old white man's right arm crossed by the 31-year-old black woman's left -- three strangers trying to remain afloat in each other's grace.

A mother in fearful understanding of her son's danger was cradled by the kindness of two strangers whose interlocking arms seemed to symbolize America's great hope -- hope that Marines have defended for centuries.

So finally, after a half-hour ceremony, Karen Parker no longer had to weep alone.

America was with her.

Melanie,
I am glad your son is still with you even tho he is far away and in a dangerous battle. I for one am thankful for your son and all the others. I wish for your son a safe return home. I can not imgaine what you and your family must be going through.
Sewhappie, I have my box of kleenex by my side and I still have tears rolling down my face. That was a beautiful story. Thank you for sharing and showing that we the people can stand together and help each other whether we know them or not.

Hope all is still well for your son in Iraq. I understand what you are going through. My children (son (27), daughter(22) and son in law(24)) have been home for a year now from Iraq. My son is getting ready to go to Afghanistan and my daughter's now ex-husband is on his way back to Iraq. (SIGHS)... this war is hell on all Our families. Huggs to all.
