I made my daughter new look pattern 6466 which has a zipper up the back. Well, she's pregnant and has grown quite a bit in the bra department and now can't get this top done up at all. She really wants to wear it, and could once baby is born I think (in 2 weeks?) But I have pulled out the zipper at the back and attempted to put in lacing to do up the top, but that doesn't work as the fabric is a stretchy sheer knit (almost something you'd use for lingerie). I have lined the bodice with a lining so it doesn't stretch as much. I don't have any extra fabric either. Any one got any suggestions at all?????

Do you have enough material to put a pleat down the back?

Hi Laura,

I don't have a solution to your problem, but I wanted to tell you that I think you did a great job making the top...it's beautiful!
Take care,
Donna

What about a line of hook and eyes? I've been seeing that on ready to wear quite a bit, or put in a placket with ribbon in a matching colour and use snaps or even velcro to hold it shut. Pretty top

It is gorgeous. I'd hate to tinker with it, since it's so pretty as it is, and the baby's coming in just 2 weeks. Then again, if she is going to breast-feed, then she'll be busty for a good long while. Stretchy lace (color-matched) side panels, lined. If you're going to add fabric, it has to be done such that it looks like you meant to do that! That's the best I can think of.

Thanks for the tips, but the biggest problem is that when she puts the top on, it gaps a good 4-5 inches at the top, she really grew a chest!! Its such an odd color, I may see if I can find some stretchy lace to match and put in inserts. Silly thing is, I made two of these, and the 2nd one fit her perfectly - go figure that one out.

Sometimes when you are preg. you just have to admit that things dont fit the same. Maybe she'll be able to wear it under jackets after the baby gets here (that style is really big this year!)

Hello Bridesmom,

I would fix the problem like this:

Put some stitch and tear onder the borders of the former zipper, make some very very small buttonholes, tear the stitch and tear away and put a loooong lace in it in black or an other nice contrasting color. Instead of stitch and tear you can use some which dissolves when you wash it. I hope you can use this tip.
With kind regards,
François

Yes, I really like that idea! I just finished ripping out most of the lining, I wasn't really happy with the nonstretchy lining I had put in, so I have found a slightly stretchy lining fabric to use which will help with how the top fits, then I think I will do the buttonhole thing as I have the cording already. I'm excited to get back at it, usually when I finish something and I have to redo parts of it, it ends up in the bottom of the 'todo' basket and I keep avoiding it for as long as possible or until I get so fed up with seeing it I toss it. Thanks!!
