Making a self-lined roman shade.
Am wondering if the shade will pleat correctly if the rings are only sewn onto the lining? I as thinking of putting a stitch down through both layers, then sewing the rings to the stitching line, just to everything will pleat nicely when I pull the shade up.

Has anyone out there ever made an unlined shade? My instructions call for lining, but I want this thing to work right above all. Not worried about the privacy issue. No one can see in this window.

This is my first Roman shade...so any help would be greatly appreciated. Photos of the finished product will be up as soon as the project gets done.

I just check the Roman shade I made a few years ago and the rings are sewn to the lining. But both the lining and the fabric are heavy weight.
It hangs and pleats very nicely.
It is in a corner and I don't get close to it often. When I looked at how the rings are on there I realized it is about time to take it down and wash it!

Thanks Dorothy,
My fabric is heavy too--it's that outdoor canvas. I think I'll just try sewing the rings to the lining and see how it folds up.

Why don't you want to sew the rings all the way through? Do you not want the stitch marks to show?

I've recently done some lined Roman Shades with some home dec fabric, and I would think that the main fabric would be too heavy for it to fold up right - just my 2 cents. However, if the issue is seeing the stitch marks, you could try glueing the main fabric onto the lining fabric. That might work.

I did mine without the rods, and I just have to fuss with them a little when I pull them up so that they lay right - but otherwise they look/work fine.

Would love to see them when they're finished! (As I have many more to do!)
