Being inspired by Ottobre i'm thinking of making winter coats for the kidlets, they say Hilco is the source of most of their fabrics, I've googled but could not find anything. anyone know the source of any great outerwear fabric source? :Canada:

Londa handles the Hilco fabrics I think. For :Canada: sources, try www.peakfabrics.com

denver fabrics (http://www.denverfabrics.com/pages/static/outdoor-recreation/outdoor-recreation-fabric.htm)
I haven't shopped with them yet, but I like poking around their website. If you use them, let us know how your experience goes.

I have had great service from Sundrop Textiles Inc. in Port Coquitlam, B.C. They do a very large mail order business, and also offer sampling swatches.Their web site is www.sundroptextiles.com.

Ditto,Sundrop - every coat I have made I got fabric there. Check out their website. They may have a toll free number, can answer all sorts of questions over line - even what not to buy. I never take a trip south without a visit there. Ask about Hilco. They have some of their own fabrics made which are usually better than those they are replacing. eg. Westcoast fabric instead of Commander.

Textile Outfitters in Calgary carry top quality fabrics. They also have an incredible big sale in the fall.

However, their website is sadly out of date. :re:

My favorite source for outerwear woolens is blankets :)
There are so many lovely blankets in stores (even places like target and wal mart) and there's always the thrift store. I'd just recommend washing your blankets (and drying them) to preshrink them first. I like to use old army blankets as underlining or for winter pet beds too.

Last year, I got into making house coats out of those rayon chenille throws. If you try that, be sure to fuse the whole blanket with that knit nylon tricot before you ever cut into it. Btw, I'm a coat maker. Outerwear is my thing :)

Kathleen, I had no idea you were a coat maker. Any chance of some pics.of your work? :bluewink:

People, Kathleen has probably forgotten more about sewing than most of us know. Not that she is old, lol, just extremely knowledgeable. I am indeed fortunate to have her visit our site once in a while.

Oh Mary...where would I put them all? I have made sooooo many coats. I suppose I can scan them and post a link. Many of them are leather and lots of men's suit coats too.

oh, and it's so funny what you said about what I've forgotten about sewing...I had come up with this cool new way to sew welt pockets so I did up a tutorial on it last year. When I was done, something started bugging me...that I'd seen it somewhere before, you know, just this nagging feeling so I started looking through old magazines and darn it all! I found an article in Creative Machine newsletter from 1998 and "my" method was there! I was absolutely mortified until I read the author's name, LMAO...it was me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
