ok, I read the EXCELLENT step by step guide on inserting invisible zippers on this site. I am excited to try this on my own. I understand that I need a special "invisible zipper foot" for my machine, but my question is: (now don't laugh ) do I need a special zipper? Is the invisible zipper a method by which to insert any zipper more nicely or do I need to purchase special "invisible zippers"? TIA! Jen who avoids zippers at all costs usually, but needs to confront her fear head on-lol! |

I am not very good at explaining things so I'll skip that part. I use the zipper foot that came with my machine and it works nicely, and yes, invisible zippers are a bit different than regular and the installation is also different. Sometimes I need to see things before fully comprehending instructions so may I suggest you ask a salesperson at the fabric store to show you the difference or, look at an invisible zipper and a regular zipper on garments and you'll understand the difference. I'm sure the other ladies will jump in with further explanations. |

Thank you, Dede! Thats exactly the info I was looking for!!! I went on EBAY (don't know why I didn't think of that before---I guess I just felt funny typing in invisible zipper---my dh would definitely make fun of that terminology--how can you see it if it is invisible, etc...) and found pics of them in packaging clearly labeled "no show" and "invisible zipper". Thanks again so much! Jen |

Jen: When you zip an invisible zipper, the teeth do not show as in a regular zipper when it is zipped. I know that Hancock's and I think JoAnn's both have the kits for the invisible zipper foot and the different size shanks that you will need to use it on your machine. Patsy Patsy

Thank you so much, Patsy, for describing what an invisible zipper looks like unpackaged. Next time I am at Hancock's I will look for the kits. I remember seeing the invisible zipper foot at JoAnn's previously, but our local store is in the process of moving and having a moving sale blowout which has translated to bare walls! lol! Not much left to buy there. Thanks again Jen |

Jen, I only wish you had asked you insightful question months ago, before I tried to invisible-ize a regular zipper!!!!! It didn't work! I never thought to ask.

Regular zippers teeth stick out in the middle and interlock so that the teeth show when you look at them. The invisible zippers are turned so that the sides of the teeth have to fit together (somehow) and you see the tape instead of the teeth. I don't know how they do it but I wish I had invented them back in the late '60s when they first came out to the general public.

I use my button hole foot for invisible zippers they fit in the groove perfectly and allow you to sew very closely to the coil. The key is to NOT sew your seam until after inserting your zipper.
