Today was the first time I've ever done shirring with elastic thread. Turned out very nice. One question though. It calls for this same shirring at the wrist. Is the elastic strong enough to hold up there? It's for a 9 yr old, long sleeves and I'm sure she is going to be pulling and tugging on the sleeves on a regular basis.

If you secure the thread ends well enough, it should be fine.. I would pull to the WS and knot them and then tie one more time for safety..

Valerie you hand wind it onto your bobbin. Depending on your fabric you may or maynot need to stretch it slightly while you wind. Be sure to tie knots when you finish sewing your seams with it too. I thought back stitching would be enough-it wasn't so I had to redo all I had done.

I know a lady who used to design knits. She used to weave elastic thread into the cuffs of her sweaters. With that, her ribbing or sleeves never stretched out of shape.

When I was a child and young teen, elastic thread was in a lot of our clothes...even into the 70's. I've had dresses with elastic thread in the midriff section. It is very comfortable and wears well.

If you have a sweat shirt or sweater sleeve that stretches out you can sew in the elastic thread to make it like new again. |

My sister told me once she sews over the elastic with a zigzag and then pulls the elastic to how tight she wants it and then sews the side seams. She says it's much easier then threading elastic onto the bobbin and she can adjust it to what ever she thinks is best. I've never tried either way but I will have to soon. I cut out a fleece top and there is no knit banding to match it anywhere so I guess I'll have to give it a whirl. Violet I've decided to live forever - so far, so good.

Violet, One of my serger books, from the distant past told me that when I could not find ribbing in a matching color, that I could use self fabric always.. if it stretches a lot use a piece 2/3 the size of what you are binding.. If it does not stretch as much use a piece 3/4 the size of what you are binding.. A lot of times when I make myself t-shirts from printed interlock, I use the self fabric for neckbands and sleeve bands just because it looks better.. I'd rather do that than use ribbing that is off color.. Sew With Love
