My grandaughter Raine will be starting kindergarten this year and I wanted to embroider her name on her back pack. Problem is that my little darling has picked out a "Tinkerbel" back pack and the only available space seems to be on the smaller pocket section which is made from a heavy plastic.
Originally I had thought to place her name on the back side where it is hidden when she wears it, but this is padded and fairly thick.

Anyone else ever tried to do this? Tips? Suggesstions? I would prefer the back (padded) side so safeties sake, but I am not sure how I would even hoop it.

If your wanting to hide her name ,how about doing the embroidery on the under side of one of the straps ? If you do it on the pocket you'll have to remove the pocket & then put it back on. I don't know if this helps you or not but all I can think of at the moment without seeing the packpack.

It basicly looks like this one, has the main pocket, which is canvas and the back side of it id padded. A smaller pocket on the front which is a vinyl material.

I am willing to give it a go on the back side, but I am wondering if a) it is hoopable, I haven't tried yet (at work) and b) if the needle will even go thru it. and c) wouldn't I have to loosen the tope tension a lot for something that thick?

I was thinking how clever an idea it was untill I got a close up look at the backpack.

If hooping is a problem, could you embroider to fabric and attach it as an applique? Just a thought.

I covered up a logo name on the back of a leather backpack for my neighbor.
I used a square of cotton, embroidered it and sewed it on with my machine.
(Janome's 300 E and 6500 Pro)

What you can probably do is the same thing. Embroider some cotton, and maybe glue or velcro it on. (if your machine won't do heavy duty stitching)

Natred2, I have the Janome 10000 plus & can embroidery on heavy material without changeing the tension but do it on a slower speed. If your machine can then I'd use the Solvy sticky & not use the top part of the hoop. I do like the girls idea of doing the embroidery on cotton fabric & sewing it onto the backpack.

Thanks for all the great ideas. I think I may mock up a test fabric and try that before I try the real thing. If all else fails, it will be like you say, embroidered on fabric and sewn on.

I will let you know hwo it goes. I am not sure if a PE180D can handle that heavy a peice or not.

I embroider my son's name on wide ribbon and then stitch it to the pack, they are just too heavy for my machine to move properly without distorting the embroidery.

Well, hooping a store bought back pack was impossible in this case.
there was way too much padding in this particular one... so I ended up embroidering her name on some cotton, added a little girly lace around the piece and hand sewed it to the backside of her back pack. It turned out very nice.

I did not want her name visable to just anyone for safety's sake, so it cannot be seen when she is wearing it. I thought too about putting it on the underside of the strap.

Raine came over yesterday to pick up her backpack and her eyes got huge when she saw what I had done. It was so cute, she very softly said "My Name!" and grabbed her bag and smiled.

Makes it worth the frustration :bg:
