How do I make roman blinds that can be attached to a decorative curtain rod?

Hi Franie,
Welcome to Sew Whats New. I myself have never done this, but I am sure someone will help you out. Meanwhile look around and join in the boards.

Hi Franie,
Are you planning on making working roman shades or just stationary? When using rods for working shades, they have a tendency to "creep" when raising and lower because they are not permenantly attached across the top. You have to add eye screws to the top of the shade to keep the rows of cords straight. If you let me know which style you are planning on making, I can give you some tips.

I want to make working Roman Blinds for two bedroom windows as the windows are opened during the night. The windows are 24x48 and 48x48.

You'd have to mount a board under the rod, for the screw eyes, as if you were making a regular roman, but extend your heading to go on the rod. You can't make a working roman just hanging from a rod, unless you use split rings to tie the rings together manually.

I am looking at a roman shade in a catalogue that says "4 self-fastening attachements at the top for hanging on a decorative rod. The rod looks like it it very thick and the blind is in widths 30-60inches and the blind pulls up. Will keep looking.

That's probably something the manufacturer had made exclusively for them. I have never saw anything like that available. It is not hard to make a mounting board with screw eyes.

Hi Frannie

I agree with Martha if your going to make the roman shades to go on a rod you will need some type of anchor for the pull cords.. The last time I did this I attached the eye screws to the inside top of the window and it worked out fine.. That would take the tension off the shade it self.. Personally I think they look much better on the boards and it only takes 2 screws to hold them plus imho they are easier

Could you attach your blind to the curtain pole like a tab top and add the screw eyes behind the tabs to pull up the blind? I'm thinking you are using a wooden pole with finials - I plan to try this for a room I am decorating.
