Theres books out ' Stack and Whack and Stack and Whackier'. I keep missing the class at my local fabric store.
It's a way to stack a large print fabric, cut it and sew it into octagonals (they look like pinwheels) against a solid background. I have the Stack and Whack book, just haven't had the energy to try it yet. But it LOOKS fabulous !

I just bought the book Stack'n'whack from amazon last month. I have a suitably aged piece of fabric in my stash io try it out. A jungle print. Basically you have 6-8 layers of fabric lets say 2 repeat lengths all stacked on top of each other so that they are perfectly lined up, cut your strips then diamonds (or whatever) and you have a stack of 6-8 diamonds all the same but they are different from the other stacks. These individual stacks become the blocks. Clear as mud eh??!!! :monkey: You get some lovely effects - the pictures in the book are great swirling keilidoscope (sp?) effects.
Another project in the queue

I also have a book but haven't tried it yet. It's amazing the different blocks that you can get from the same piece of fabric.

My manger at work went to a stack and whack class. The blocks came out wonderful. She mention that the pattern has to have a certain repeat, like every so many inches. She said once you stacked and whacked a couple of time it becomes really easy to do. The only thing she said was you has to make sure you used the same part of the pattern on the one stack so that all the cuts from that stack look identical.

I've made 2 sets of hexagon blocks with the Stack-n-Whack method. I still haven't put them together. :re: One was with a cow fabric. Very interesting results.
I also made some stack-n-whack dresden plate blocks using a floral print. I've actually been trying to finish this one because I want to hang it in my living room.
It's alot of fun. Each block is a surprise.
I saw Bethany Reynolds on TV a few days ago (American Quilter, I think) demonstrating the technique.

I saw a show on TV demonstrating the Stack and Whack and then couldn't find the book! So I took what info I remembered and started on my own. I cut an 8 point star pattern and I do love how each star is so very different from the others and how the repeat of the pattern in each star looks. For all of you with the book and not making a stack and whack quilt you really need to give it a try soon. It is a reaL treat to watch these quilts develope!

I just took this class and made my sister a wedding quilt with this pattern.. eventhou all the same material all the blocks come out different ill try and find a picture so i can send too you.
the material has to have a repeat of pattern design in it about every 4" then ya gotta cut it a way that the design if about 4" strips will lay all ontop of each other. if ya to flick material it would be same design underneight right threw to about 8 layers. then from here its all in the dia cut thatyou gotta make and sew them back together. was a fun class to see all the different designs. Ill try and find my pic soon

If you can find it to show us that would be wonderful I just may get some inspiration to whack a few on this side of the border.

Just had to share (sort of) I finally made my stack'n'whack quilt - well it is pieced goodness knows when it will get quilted. I am really pleased with it and I will post a photo once my DS returns my cable so I can down load photos. It was fun having all the blocks come out so different.

I have a king size kaleidoscope Pinwheel stack n whack cut out but I can't find the time to start putting it together and I'm getting very aggravated about not having time to work on it. It is shades of green and wine to go in my master bedroom.

I have that same pattern cut out but haven't had time to do any piecing on it yet. :bluesad: Probably won't be able to get any of it done until after December 11th. Then, look out because the only things I'm going to sew on are gonna be for me. Some new winter clothes and quilt blocks.
